About the Item

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. American City Diner, a captivating cityscape immortalized on canvas by the talented Joey Mánlapaz, emerges with nostalgic allure and realism. Painted in the classic medium of oil, this artwork captures the essence of a bygone era, inviting viewers to step into a scene reminiscent of mid-century America. At the forefront of the composition stands the titular diner, its facade adorned with vibrant blue stripes that contrast elegantly against the warm, inviting glow emanating from within. The meticulous attention to detail brings the diner to life, from the gleaming chrome accents to the intricate signage that proudly announces its name. Adding to the charm of the scene is a classic electric horse and car toy stationed in front of the diner, evoking memories of childhood innocence and simpler times. The toy serves as a playful reminder of the era's fascination with Americana and the joy found in the simplest pleasures. Mánlapaz's mastery of realism is evident in every brushstroke, as the scene comes alive with vivid color and depth. The color scheme, dominated by shades of blue, yellow, and green, further enhances the nostalgic ambiance, transporting viewers to a time of diners, neon lights, and bustling city streets. American City Diner by Joey Mánlapaz is not only a testament to the artist's skill and vision but also a prized addition to any art collection. For those eager to acquire this exquisite piece, it is available for purchase at Signet Contemporary Art, Chelsea, where it can be admired in person. Additionally, art enthusiasts from around the world can conveniently acquire this masterpiece online, ensuring that its timeless beauty can be enjoyed by collectors near and far. Don't miss the opportunity to own a slice of Americana-inspired artistry with American City Diner. Artist biography: Joey P. Mánlapaz (MFA, George Washington University) is a contemporary realist painter, avid educator, compassionate art provider for the older community, noted curator and juror all rolled into one. She lives and works in Washington, DC, the main subject of her canvases, which are widely recognized and collected, most notably by the nation’s capital that owns 43 paintings and prints. The artist is recipient of commissions, grants, and fellowships in support of her work. The U.S. Library of Congress and First Lady Laura Bush commissioned the artist for the coveted 2003 National Book Festival. Her paintings have been shown at nationwide galleries and museums. Her papers, correspondence and sketchbooks are in the collection of the U.S. Library of Congress Asian American and Pacific Islander Division. A replica of her painting is installed permanently at the Bethesda Metro Tunnel in Maryland. Mánlapaz’s ongoing fascination for and concentration on the city of Washington as subject matter was influenced by the late painter Frank Wright, her mentor renowned for his depictions of 18th-19th century architecture of downtown DC. In her realist renditions, she examines the relationship between the factual photorealism of Richard Estes and the deep psychological sensibility of Edward Hopper, and attempts to bridge the two concepts to achieve a painterly style with a generous dose of Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful thrill. The artist is Associate Faculty at the Corcoran School of Art & Design at George Washington University and lecturer at The Art League (VA).

The Brooklyn Diner
Located in Fairfield, CT
After a long, successful career with the Eastman Kodak Company as a photojournalist and editorial photographer, Emile Dillon returned to painting in 1998. As a photographer he traveled the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe. While he’d chosen the camera for his profession, he’d grown up with oil on canvas. His grandfather was the Harlem Renaissance painter Frank Joseph Dillon and a favorite uncle was the Latin American artist Felix Vargas. Dillon’s years behind the camera and days in Soho galleries inspired him to pursue Photorealism as a style. But instead of the landscape of the exotic which he’d experienced in his Kodak travels, he was fascinated by the humble diners, motels, and vintage signs which were vanishing from American towns and cities. To perfect his craft, he studied at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York. In an article on his work in the July 2019 issue of American Art Collector magazine, Dillon comments on his subject matter. “Somebody’s got to save these things…These places may not exist anymore in the next 100 years.” Dillon’s favorite painting in this exhibition is Dunkin Donuts...
