John Pierce Barnes was born in Philadelphia in 1893. He graduated from high school in the Germantown area of Philadelphia and served in the U.S. Navy during the First World War. After his discharge from the Navy, John began his training at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Design, now the University of the Arts. Barnes then studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia from 1921-1925. He exhibited watercolors and pastels in the Annual Philadelphia Water Color and Miniature Exhibitions of 1921 and 1922. John Pierce Barnes studied with Daniel Garber, and also Henry Hugh Breckenridge and Arthur B. Carles at the PAFA. He was awarded Cresson Travel Scholarships in 1923 and 1924. These awards enabled him to study in France, Belgium and Holland. John Pierce Barnes experimented in several styles, but is best known for his oil paintings of landscapes and portraits rendered in the Impressionist style. Some of his work was painted in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, some in Europe, but mostly in eastern Pennsylvania. Up until the time of his death in 1954, Mr. Barnes was employed by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) Victor Design Division in Camden, New Jersey. John Bond Francisco was born in Cincinnati, OH on Dec. 14, 1863. From an early age Francisco was drawn to both music and art. He studied the violin with Hermann Eckhardt and painting at the Cincinnati Art Academy for several years.
He arrived in Los Angeles in 1887 and was so taken with the beauty of the place, he opted to make it his home. He soon continued his studies in Berlin, Munich, and in Paris at Académies Julian and Colarossi under Courtois, Bouguereau, and Robert-Fleury. While in Europe he studied the violin in the morning hours and painting in the afternoon.
Upon returning to Los Angeles in 1892, he married and built a home at 1401 Albany Street where he lived for the rest of his life. Combining an art and music career, he helped form the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra in 1897 and served as their first concert master. While teaching music and art at his studio, he made painting excursions into the surrounding countryside, often with his pupil Elmer Wachtel. He combined his Munich technique with that of the Barbizon's influence to produce paintings of California deserts and mountains that held dramatic light and shade contrasts. Later his palette brightened and he leaned more toward Impressionism.
Francisco's studio in the Blanchard Bldg and his home were a mecca for both painters and musicians until his death on Jan. 8, 1931.

The work, undoubtedly commissioned as an object of private devotion, shows the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, a Gospel episode here set on the two figures portrayed in the foreground, the Archangel Gabriel with outstretched wings, a portrait of supernatural beauty, and the Virgin;
We see her here absorbed in reading a prayer book with her eyes turned humbly downwards as a sign of devotion, while a small cherub hands her white lilies, a symbol of purity and chastity.
In the upper part of the composition is the austere image of God the Father, with the dove radiating with light, emblem of the Holy Spirit, surrounded by a flock of angels fluttering in the clouds charged with intense glow and play of light, in full Baroque style.
It should also be noted that the image of the Saviour's mother in a delicately pious attitude, with her yellow veil, her broad blue mantle and her usual modest red dress from which the edges of her white blouse protrude, is to be interpreted as a kind of tender allegory of sacred love.

It could be argued that cave walls were the canvases for the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict and elevate natural scenery through art, but there is a richer history to consider.
The Netherlands was home to landscapes as a major theme in painting as early as the 1500s, and ink-on-silk paintings in China featured mountains and large bodies of water as far back as the third century. Greeks created vast wall paintings that depicted landscapes and grandiose garden scenes, while in the late 15th century and early 16th century, landscapes were increasingly the subject of watercolor works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo.
The popularity of religious paintings eventually declined altogether, and by the early 19th century, painters of classical landscapes took to painting out-of-doors (plein-air painting). Paintings of natural scenery were increasingly realistic but romanticized too. Into the 20th century, landscapes remained a major theme for many artists, and while the term “landscape painting” may call to mind images of lush, grassy fields and open seascapes, the genre is characterized by more variety, colors and diverse styles than you may think. Painters working in the photorealist style of landscape painting, for example, seek to create works so lifelike that you may confuse their paint for camera pixels. But if you’re shopping for art to outfit an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas (and the right frame is important, too).
Adding a landscape painting to your home can introduce peace and serenity within the confines of your own space. (Some may think of it as an aspirational window of sorts rather than a canvas.) Abstract landscape paintings by the likes of Korean painter Seungyoon Choi or Georgia-based artist Katherine Sandoz, on the other hand, bring pops of color and movement into a room. These landscapes refuse to serve as a background.
