Description: This lyrical watercolor by Pierre Neveu captures a peaceful French village scene framed by a sunlit garden path, steps, and a cluster of traditional houses set against rolling hills. Neveu’s fluid brushwork and instinctive sense of colour bring instant warmth to the composition. At the centre of the composition, a set of gently descending steps leads toward a small white house with a sharply peaked roof—one of the characteristic architectural forms found in many historic French villages. This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...

It could be argued that cave walls were the canvases for the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict and elevate natural scenery through art, but there is a richer history to consider.
The Netherlands was home to landscapes as a major theme in painting as early as the 1500s, and ink-on-silk paintings in China featured mountains and large bodies of water as far back as the third century. Greeks created vast wall paintings that depicted landscapes and grandiose garden scenes, while in the late 15th century and early 16th century, landscapes were increasingly the subject of watercolor works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo.
The popularity of religious paintings eventually declined altogether, and by the early 19th century, painters of classical landscapes took to painting out-of-doors (plein-air painting). Paintings of natural scenery were increasingly realistic but romanticized too. Into the 20th century, landscapes remained a major theme for many artists, and while the term “landscape painting” may call to mind images of lush, grassy fields and open seascapes, the genre is characterized by more variety, colors and diverse styles than you may think. Painters working in the photorealist style of landscape painting, for example, seek to create works so lifelike that you may confuse their paint for camera pixels. But if you’re shopping for art to outfit an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas (and the right frame is important, too).
Adding a landscape painting to your home can introduce peace and serenity within the confines of your own space. (Some may think of it as an aspirational window of sorts rather than a canvas.) Abstract landscape paintings by the likes of Korean painter Seungyoon Choi or Georgia-based artist Katherine Sandoz, on the other hand, bring pops of color and movement into a room. These landscapes refuse to serve as a background.
