Antique English 19th century marine scene
Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding English late 18th / early 19th century marine scene by one of Britain's best known and sought after painters. William (or Wiliam) Anderson (1757 – 27 May 1837) was a Scottish artist specializing in maritime and patriotic themes. He was well-regarded for his detailed and accurate portraits of ships under sail, exhibiting his works annually in London between 1787 and 1811 and then occasionally until 1834. Anderson influenced other artists, notably John Ward and others of the Hull school. Anderson's early life is obscure, but he is known to have trained as a shipwright before moving to London to become a maritime painter when he was about 30. His training served him well as a painter, providing "a practical nautical knowledge" of his subjects. He earned a reputation for "accuracy and refinement of detail" and was admired for his bright, clear colours. He worked in both oils and watercolours. He based his style on that of well-known Dutch maritime...

Claude Vignon (towers 1593 - Paris 1670), The Fortune Teller
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Claude Vignon (Tours, 1593 - Paris, 1670) The Fortune Teller Oil painting on canvas (65 x 84 cm. - In frame 94 x 113 cm.) The work is accompanied by a critical study drawn up by prof. Emilio Negro (Bologna) The subject immortalized in this intriguing painting, called 'Good luck', is a scene of everyday life that we would have seen frequently in the crowded streets of central Rome at the time. The protagonists of the canvas are a young fortune teller and a well-dressed nobleman who lets himself be predicted by reading the hand. The gentleman, who listens curiously to the response and with a hint of malice holds his gold necklace in his hands, is in the meantime robbed by an accomplice of the woman, intent on taking the purse out of his pocket. Although this type of paintings were intended for the decoration of the residences of the Roman aristocrats, who with a hint of self-irony saw themselves in the figure of the unfortunate grullo, were actually harbingers of moralizing messages. Among the many proposals there was certainly the warning towards the desire to know one's destiny without respecting the priority of the divine will that determines it, relying for this on cunning charlatans. It must be said that, although more than four centuries have passed and certain dynamics have naturally changed, this subject appears extremely current. Clearly inspired by the Buona Ventura painted by Caravaggio, the painting is part of that line of scenes taken from the painter's favorite street life and which, given the collector's fortune already at the time, were often reworked by many artists, considered a stimulating theme and full of psychological implications. In particular, the work in question is attributed to the French painter Claude Vignon (Tours 1593 - Paris 1670), presumably to be placed during his years spent in Rome, before his return to Paris, showing the artist's masterful interpretation of the work conceived by Caravaggio. After his training in Paris by Jacob Bunel, one of the most famous masters of the reign of Henry IV, he moved to Rome around 1609-1610, being part of that large community of French painters, including Simon Vouet and Valentin de Boulogne...

Landscape Village Market Paint Oil on canvas Old master 18th Century Flemish Art
By Circle of Pieter van Bredael (Antwerp 1629 - 1719)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
18th century Dutch school (circa 1700.) - Circle of Pieter van Bredael (Antwerp 1629 - 1719) A village square with a market scene oil on canvas, 78 x 108 cm., Framed 94 x 121 cm. - Dorotheum, Vienne, Alte Meister...

Calls in the Manitou Passage - Photorealistic Painting of Bald Eagle Screeching
Located in Chicago, IL
A male bald eagle screeches to be heard above the stormy backdrop of Lake Michigan's Manitou Passage in Northern Michigan. Extraordinarily painted with such realistic detail, this majestic bird's feathers beg for the viewer to come in for a closer look at its plumage. The piece is framed in a simple black wooden frame measuring 31 x 51 inches. Rick Pas Calls in the Manitou Passage acrylic on panel 28h x 48w in 71.12h x 121.92w cm RPA022 ARTIST'S STATEMENT Creating is an addiction. With all the highs and lows you would expect. I am interested in the surface textures and creating paintings that portray them in realistic detail. Hopefully a viewer will feel they can run a hand over the feathers and moss, or grasp an object in the painting. This detail is usually composed in an abstract design. The design can occur naturally or be arranged by me. Roos Landscape Myth Mercury Horse Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17th Century
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Johann Heinrich Roos (Otterberg 1631 - Frankfurt 1685) Landscape with the myth of Mercury and Batto (from Ovid's Metamorphoses) Oil painting on canvas 101 x 159 cm. With frame 115 x 174 cm. The work represents the mythological episode, taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Ovid, Metamorphoses, II, 676-707), and precisely when the god Mercury, taking advantage of a moment in which Apollo leaves his herd alone, steals some heifers and then hides them in a ravine. The only witness to the theft is the old Batto, a shepherd in charge of looking after the purebred horses of the rich Neleus, king of Pilo and who, in exchange for a heifer, guarantees the God not to be a spy, swearing to him that he will remain silent as a stone. . Immediately distrusting of his words, Mercury decides to test his honesty: he presents himself in front of him with another aspect, asking him if he had seen a herd pass by, and offering him in exchange for this information a bull and a heifer. Batto, who is immediately tempted by this new and more convenient offer, indicates without hesitation where the animals were hidden. As Ovid well illustrates in his poem 'the Metamorphoses', whoever betrays the trust or benevolence of a God is forced to a bitter fate, and so Batto is transformed by Mercury into a stone, remaining silent for eternity just as he had promised. The scene represents the moment when Mercury is offering Batto a heifer, which he indicates with his hand, in exchange for his loyalty. The divinity is perfectly recognizable due to his classical attributes, the winged helmet and shoes and above all the caduceus, the winged staff with two twisted snakes, which he will use to transform the shepherd into a stone. The figurative and exhibition peculiarities of this valuable painting...

It could be argued that cave walls were the canvases for the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict and elevate natural scenery through art, but there is a richer history to consider.

The Netherlands was home to landscapes as a major theme in painting as early as the 1500s, and ink-on-silk paintings in China featured mountains and large bodies of water as far back as the third century. Greeks created vast wall paintings that depicted landscapes and grandiose garden scenes, while in the late 15th century and early 16th century, landscapes were increasingly the subject of watercolor works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo.

The popularity of religious paintings eventually declined altogether, and by the early 19th century, painters of classical landscapes took to painting out-of-doors (plein-air painting). Paintings of natural scenery were increasingly realistic but romanticized too. Into the 20th century, landscapes remained a major theme for many artists, and while the term “landscape painting” may call to mind images of lush, grassy fields and open seascapes, the genre is characterized by more variety, colors and diverse styles than you may think. Painters working in the photorealist style of landscape painting, for example, seek to create works so lifelike that you may confuse their paint for camera pixels. But if you’re shopping for art to outfit an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas (and the right frame is important, too).

Adding a landscape painting to your home can introduce peace and serenity within the confines of your own space. (Some may think of it as an aspirational window of sorts rather than a canvas.) Abstract landscape paintings by the likes of Korean painter Seungyoon Choi or Georgia-based artist Katherine Sandoz, on the other hand, bring pops of color and movement into a room. These landscapes refuse to serve as a background. Elsewhere, Adam Straus’s technology-inspired paintings highlight how our extreme involvement with our devices has removed us from the glory of the world around us. Influenced by modern life and steeped in social commentary, Straus’s landscape paintings make us see our surroundings anew.

Whether you’re seeking works by the world’s most notable names or those authored by underground legends, find a vast collection of landscape paintings on 1stDibs.
