Charles Evans was a modernist known for his abstract style of painting. He studied at New York's Art Students League and Parsons School of Design, and later in Paris with Fernand Lger at the Acadmie Moderne. In 1930, Evans and his wife spent a year living in what was Paul Cezanne's studio in Aix-en-Provence, France. The following year, Evans purchased the old silk mill in New Hope and became involved in the area's modernist movement, joining the Independents in 1932. By 1935, he began to work collaboratively with Louis Stone, whom he had met in 1929 while studying with Hans Hofman in Saint Tropez, and with Charles F. Ramsey, teaching art classes and working on the Cooperative Painting Project. Every week, the three were joined by the abstract painter, Lee Gatch, in discussions at Ledger's Inn in Lambertville. In 1948 Evans co-founded the New Hope Gazette with Walter M. Teller. The same year he created set designs for St. John Terrell's Lambertville Music Circus. About the Artist
Artist Heidi Hybl starts each day listening to the birds sing in the canyon near her home in Big Sur. Then, she makes a cup of tea, reviews the previous day’s work, turns on her podcasts and starts. She paints in a small studio that is separate from her house, and works on several pieces at a time within what she would call “organized chaos.” She also takes time to tend her flowers, vegetables, chickens and goats. A former medical professional, Heidi worked for several years with laser machines, developing a knowledge and a fascination with the color spectrum and light. Living in Big Sur offers inspiration in the ever-changing atmospheric conditions that arise when hills, canyons, and ocean meet. She then reduces these elements to an abstract experience on canvas in a color palette derived from her surroundings: sunsets and storms, fire and fog.

Peter has an absolute love of oil painting and especially admires the masters of Dutch Painting of the 17th Century, which is reflected in his own work. Since 1995, after seeing the work of Estonian artist Olav Maran, Peter decided to review his paintings and started researching ‘Still Life’ painters such as Willem Kalf and De Heem. After experimenting with priming his own panels and canvases with different colours, then painting with thick and thin paint and glazing on top, in the way of the old masters, he has developed a style with detail and atmosphere that is essential in his portrayal of fine wine, fruit and cheeses etc.
In a quirky and sometimes conceptual world, Peter makes no apologies for producing traditional subjects where the craftsmanship is evident in every brushstroke. His paintings bring much joy and pleasure to those who understand he has an obvious and underlying love of handling paint and observing his subject using techniques that take many years to acquire. Recently he has changed the view point for some of his paintings, to give them a bold contemporary look.

It could be argued that cave walls were the canvases for the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict and elevate natural scenery through art, but there is a richer history to consider.
The Netherlands was home to landscapes as a major theme in painting as early as the 1500s, and ink-on-silk paintings in China featured mountains and large bodies of water as far back as the third century. Greeks created vast wall paintings that depicted landscapes and grandiose garden scenes, while in the late 15th century and early 16th century, landscapes were increasingly the subject of watercolor works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo.
The popularity of religious paintings eventually declined altogether, and by the early 19th century, painters of classical landscapes took to painting out-of-doors (plein-air painting). Paintings of natural scenery were increasingly realistic but romanticized too. Into the 20th century, landscapes remained a major theme for many artists, and while the term “landscape painting” may call to mind images of lush, grassy fields and open seascapes, the genre is characterized by more variety, colors and diverse styles than you may think. Painters working in the photorealist style of landscape painting, for example, seek to create works so lifelike that you may confuse their paint for camera pixels. But if you’re shopping for art to outfit an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas (and the right frame is important, too).
Adding a landscape painting to your home can introduce peace and serenity within the confines of your own space. (Some may think of it as an aspirational window of sorts rather than a canvas.)
