1916

About

An early twentieth-century, Symbolist style landscape with a shepherd in the foreground shown seated beneath a tree and playing the flute with a view beyond towards a windmill and the setting sun. Signed lower left 'Benj. D. Kopman' for Benjamin Kopman (American, 1887-1965); additionally signed verso and painted circa 1916. Framed in a hand-carved and gold-leafed frame by Carrig-Rohane and dated 1916. Frame incised ‘Carrig-Rohane Shop Inc., RC + NM Vose, Boston, 1916, #1530’. Framed Dimensions: 17 x 15.5 inches Russian-born, Benjamin Kopman studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and exhibited with success throughout the United States, including at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery and the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a member of the Allied Artists of America, the American Artists Congress and the Artists Equity Association. He worked for the Works Project Administration and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards. Kopman’s work is held in the permanent collections of museums throughout the United States, including the Carnegie Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Brooklyn Museum, among others. The artist is well-listed in all reference works including Who Was Who in American Art and Benezit. We are pleased to offer this lyrical work from the artist’s Symbolist period, a painting that happily retains its original, serial-numbered Carrig-Rohane frame.
