About the Item
When we mention Bernard Buffet, we instinctively think of his tortured portraits and dark representations of human emotions. However, his work presents a much richer and more complex dimension, such as this less conventional canvas, which, instead of focusing on characters, captures a Parisian scene in a landscape format. In this work, a view of the Seine and the sky, a fragment of the Eiffel Tower blending into a green that seems largely fantasized, a bridge and a total absence of human figures launch the viewer into a visual meditation of the secrets that reside at the heart of the City of Lights.
The artist uses black not simply as a color but as a proper tool for sculpting. Shapes are drawn and delineated, contrasting with washed-out colors such as blue and green. Black symbolizes the mystery and inaccessibility of the emotions that the artist seeks to express. Unlike his other works, adding characters to tell a story, Buffet, with this piece, appears more interested in the elements and structural aspects of the composition itself.
Buffet succeeds in establishing a link between the observer and the piece represented. The Eiffel Tower and the bridge become the keepers of secrets, frameworks that bear the weight of Paris's history. The river mirrors the sky, with water ripples in the clouds as though a stone had been cast into a suspended lake, disrupting the calm surface. In Buffet's work, there is always an unsettling undercurrent. Everyone can project their experience or memories onto this flowing Seine, this bridge on which no one walks, and this Eiffel Tower that seems to observe silently.
This piece bears a dual signature and comes elegantly framed. On the left, a pencil signature marks the step, while on the right, the artist’s name is printed, followed by the year '68. It is worth remembering that 1968 in France was a year of profound revolution and widespread protests. Yet again, Buffet astonishes us by proposing a work almost silent in nature, standing in sharp contrast to the chaos of the era, when millions took to the streets of Paris, at times with violence.
Buffet reminds us that art can speak just as powerfully in the absence of sound, revealing the invisible through the structures that endure. The painting becomes a reflection not of a particular moment, but of the collective experience Paris, its inhabitants, and its visitors hold in a timeless embrace.

"The Bridge over the Seine Near Argenteuil" Oil Reproduction after Claude Monet
By (after) Claude Monet
Located in Pasadena, CA
This framed reproduction of Claude Monet's immensely popular painting, “The Bridge Over The Seine Near Argenteuil,” comes with a certificate of authenticity on the back and is numbered 1102, making it interesting for several reasons.
The artagraphic process used to produce this work in a limited edition of 2900 is considered the state-of-the-art in art reproduction and the most respectful approach to reproducing a painting by a master. In three steps, this technique creates a 3D replica of an original oil painting's color and surface texture. Colors are scanned with a digital laser and then printed separately using oil-based inks on a single sheet. A mold is created from the original painting to reproduce its surface texture and bas-relief brushstrokes. Unlike lithographs and serigraphs, there is a palpable material and relief if you run your fingers over the surface.
At the Impressionist group's first exhibition in 1874, Claude Monet demonstrated his deep interest in the motif by working on seven depictions of the Argenteuil bridge and four of the railroad bridge upstream. The artwork depicts Monet's immediate impressions of the scene rather than offering detailed realism. In these series, moored sailboats occupy the foreground, while the fluidity of the river melts harmoniously with the geometrically contrasted presence of the bridge and its imposing pillars. Monet manipulates his palette and complementary color schemes to create the illusion of light and movement through small, separate, and visible brushstrokes, making it one of the artist's most recognizable signatures. The painting displays a diversity of styles, with some elements more solid, having strong and distinct lines and structured forms defined by firm contours, while the water and the sky in the background give off an impression of moving space, floating, and ripples.
An original painting of the series can be seen at Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France...

"Parisian Street", Cityscape Oil on Canvas by Robert Farrington
Located in Pasadena, CA
This Robert Farrington's painting serves as a visual gateway to a distinct period in post-war France, composed with a deep respect for the elements interwoven into the collective memory of Paris. His work adeptly engages with the archetypal settings and concepts that convey the quintessence of this beloved and frequently visited capital.
As the viewer gazes upon this artwork, they are instantly immersed in the ambiance of a food trade street, and especially the familiar historic brasserie “Au Pied de Cochon” - the sole establishment in the painting that still exists nowadays - and its surroundings at the heart of the bustling Halles district. At "6 Rue Coquillère", the act of opening the doors, each adorned with handles that resemble pig's trotters, transports one through a temporal gateway into the quintessential French world of "la cochonnaille"... The renowned "Pied de Cochon" restaurant made its debut in 1947. In its early days, it became the preferred gathering place for the "Forts des Halles" – the diligent laborers who tirelessly transported goods through the pavilions of the old Halles de Paris. From these dedicated workers to the luminaries of the time, this establishment emerged as a symbol of Parisian life. Farrington reconstructs a scene around this restaurant, nourished by her own Parisian experience when he was a young American living in France. An iconic Brigitte Bardot poster...
