About the Item

Stunning New York City urban modernist watercolor titled "Summer Afternoon Stroll" by Society of Six artist Bernard Von Eichman (American, 1899-1990), 1936. Rendered in lively colors, several people carry out their everyday lives. The street contains several buildings, each one with its own distinct character and palette. Letters of Provenance from the granddaughter of Bernard Von Eichman. Estate Signature and Stamp on verso. Presented in over-mat, unframed. Image size: 15.5"H x 21"W. Bernard Von Eichman was born in San Francisco in 1899, where he suffered a difficult childhood. He managed to enroll in the California College of Arts & Crafts in 1915, where he met Louis Siegriest with whom he would later exhibit as a member of the "Society of Six." From 1918-1930, Von Eichman exhibited his bright modernist works with the Six, a group opposed to the dominant Tonalism that was popular in the Bay Area. Von Eichman was an established artist in the 1930's when he left for relative obscurity in New York, where he lived until the onset of WW II. Returning to California, he was a resident of San Francisco and Monterey until his death in 1970, shortly before which he burned a great portion of his life's work.
