( note all this would cost £500 alone) Charles Cattermole was part of the wave of Victorian artists who were interested in reconstituting the Britain of the past in their pictures, combining an imaginative and lively vision of history with an antiquarian attention to period detail in such matters as costume, accessories and setting. This reappraisal of history painting had been gaining momentum in England since about 1830, and was prompted in large measure by the huge impact of Sir Walter Scott’s historical novels. Painters also tended now to favour scenes inspired by minor, and very often domestic, dramas instead of the more conventional heroic episodes of bygone ages. Cattermole was heavily influenced by his uncle, George Cattermole, a successful watercolourist and illustrator of Walter Scott, who specialised in historical genre. Despite the narrow focus of his art, Cattermole’s brush encompassed various distant eras in British history, his subjects ranging from the monastic and military life of the Middle Ages to swashbuckling incidents from the Civil War. His antiquarian bent enabled him to recreate the backdrop of historical anecdote with accuracy and fidelity, and his watercolours are perhaps most alluring when they illustrate scenes of wild chase, battles, duels and sieges. Cattermole showed his work at venues including the Society of British Artists, the British Institution, the Royal Academy and the Society of Painters in Water Colours, of which he became an associate in 1863 and a full member in 1870. When he first exhibited with the Society in 1864, The Art Journal said ‘he possesses qualities which will, before many years, win for him honour and reward… action, character, and composition, excellencies wherein this artist bids to be preeminent.’ Reviewing the Society’s 1869 winter exhibition in The Morning Post on 6 January, the art critic commended the ‘vigour’ and ‘refinement’ of Cattermole’s style: ‘The delicacy of colour and the neatness of touch by which his present drawings are so strikingly distinguished have not been purchased… at the cost of the still more precious qualities of dramatic action and characteristic expression. The works he now exhibits are, for the most part, interiors of churches, castles and baronial halls, which are in each case the scenes of stories so diversified in sentiment, incident, and character as to possess all the requisite freshness and variety of interest. In the uniform skill with which he treats a number of dissimilar subjects there is conclusive evidence not only of the artist’s versatility of fancy but of a still rarer gift – his capacity to adapt his manner to his theme.’ ( 19th century ) Quality piece Title: Romantic Scene Dated: around 1870 Artist: Charles Cattermole (1832 - 1900) Signature: Bottom Left Provenance: john Castagno art directory Medium : Oil painting on Canvas Condition: Excellent Country: British school Frame size : 25.5 in x 21 in ( 65 cm x 53 cm) Canvas size : 20" x 15.5" With an estimate of £4500 - £6000 In a London West End Gallery GALLERY IF YOU WISH TO VISIT THE GALLERY FOR VIEWING OR COLLECTION PLEASE CONTACT ME. This one is no exception.; His paintings remind me of the old movie, “Shangri-La,” where the travelers found a magical place while crossing the Himalayas. The Reverend’s paintings have that kind of magic in them; perhaps it’s his rich color palette or his slightly provincial, yet very Georgian style. It seems there are always pretty skies along with mountains in the background and rivers or lochs somewhere in his compositions. In any case, the result is still pure magic.; This is an accomplished yet charming painting by an artist thought to be actively painting from around 1810 to 1850 and specializing in the stunning scenery of England’s Lake District. Unfortunately, little is known about Reverend Brown’s personal life, and he did not sign most of his works. I have handled several of his paintings in the course of my career and he always has been among my favorite artists.; This gorgeous landscape delivers all of Reverend Woodley-Brown’s quintessential style, color and romantic feel for which his work is admired. His figures, though seemingly entranced themselves by the beauty around them, are there primarily to give scale and a focal point. The trees are in deep, rich greens, while the pink-tinged sky further show off his talent in the realm of color. We are immediately pulled into the artist’s world. The serenity of the scene, as in all of his works, is overwhelming, making the viewer a willing partner in the artist’s interpretation of it. The very Woodley-Brownish romantic folly only adds to the scene’s charm.; In the world of Reverend Brown, his cottages often became follies shrouded in greenery. The background mountains rose...

  • "Spring Aspen, " Oil Painting
    By Stephen Day
    Located in Denver, CO
Stephen Day's (US based) "Spring Aspen" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a forest of Pine and Aspen trees coming to life with new green buds of leaves and the thicket of the forest floor beginning to grow. Stephen Day was born in Sheridan, Wyoming, and, while growing up he lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Aspen Colorado, and Durango, Colorado. He always felt the wonderfully unique beauty of the west but until he became an artist he really didn't know how to fully respond to that beauty. Day is now a full-time artist living in Taos, New Mexico. Working mainly in oil he paints various subjects from life but the landscape is his first love. He says of his working philosophy, "I paint almost exclusively from life trying to capture the feeling and the mood of the subject before me. This work philosophy forces me to paint quickly to get a spontaneous and fresh response, because everything around us (including ourselves) is in a constant state of change." Day frequently paints on location and uses these smaller paintings to create larger studio paintings. Artist's Background: 1976 - Bachelor of Arts Degree, McMurry College, Abilene, Texas 1980 - Master's Degree, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas Studied at the Art Students League of Denver with Bruce Cody...
