About the Item
Early 20th Century oil on canvas view of a salmon river by Miss D L Murray. The painting is signed bottom left and there is an artist's label with title to the frame. Presented in a fine gilt wood and plaster frame.
A charming view of an iconic Scottish landscape, a salmon river running through green countryside. The scene is the Canonbie Beat on the Border Esk River. Famous for its salmon fishing Murray has captured the power of the river running through the bracken, gorse and undergrowth of the countryside. To the left a small cottage perhaps home to one of the gillies on the river. The artist has managed to create a painting with great movement and flow that moves the eye over the canvas.
The Canonbie beat is situated on the Border Esk river in Scotland. This beat is popular among both local and visiting anglers. It boasts good holding pools, long runs, and is excellent for night fishing. The Canonbie beat covers much of the middle section of the Border Esk system. The river flows through picturesque countryside typical of the Border area, with wooded bankside areas featuring indigenous hardwoods. The Border Esk is generally fast-flowing, with beds of rock outcrop or pebble shingle and no natural weed growth. During periods of high water, the Esk may be regarded as “gin clear.” The salmon season opens from April 1st to October 31st, and both salmon and sea trout are caught here. Salmon weighing well into the teens of pounds and even twenty-pounders are taken every season. The sea trout season runs from April 1st to September 30th, with good runs of 2-3lb seatrout providing exhilarating sport. Night fishing for seatrout is a magical experience on the Border Esk.

View AllImpressionist Barbizon School Oil on Board Landscape, The 'Gorges de la Bourne'
By Georges Guerin
Located in Cotignac, FR
1930s French Impressionist Barbizon School oil on panel view of a river gorge by Georges Guerin (1910-1984). The painting is signed bottom right and also signed top left to the back of the board. The painting is also titled and dated to the back of the board, 'Gorges de la Bourne, Pont en Royans, Aout 1937.'
A very charming view of a river passing through a gorge and leading to a sunlit and colourful rocky cliff face. Guerin has achieved a wonderful play between light and shade, bright and sombre colours making it at once classical in interpretation and yet also modern and abstract. His technique of thick impasto technique worked with a brush is especially successful and gives the paintings surface a charming quality.
Guerin is noted for his landscapes as well as for his Paris street scenes and views of the Brittany coast.
The Gorges de la Bourne or Bourne Gorge is a canyon at the bottom of which flows the River Bourne. It connects Pont-en-Royans to Villard-de-Lans in...

Stirling River Landscape Scotland - Scottish Impressionist 1910 art oil painting
By Joseph Morris Henderson
Located in London, GB
This lovely Scottish Stirlingshire Impressionist landscape is by noted artist Joseph Morris Henderson. Painted circa 1910 the composition is a river landscape with the river in the foreground and cows in the fields beyond. In the distance one can see some dwellings and hills beyond those, all beneath a summers sky. The impressionistic brushwork and colouring are just lovely. This is an excellent large example of Henderson's work and of Scottish landscape art...
