About the Item

"My work is about Place. There has always existed within me an urgency to define myself through place that stems from an upbringing full of uprooting and re homing. In the absence of the traditional childhood home, I developed a unique relationship with space, one that aims to retain memory in its purest form by utilizing nostalgia to visually explore only that which was pleasant. In my paintings I take on the role of poet-painter, creating sentimental and idealized landscapes that are devoid of any figures or formal devices traditionally used to tell a story. Pulling from themes commonly found in German Romantic landscape painting, where the artist mediates between the creative and the divine and is charged with the responsibility of examining nature and its spirit, I create intensely personal portraits of quiet, meditative spaces that encourage contemplation and reflection. These constructed landscapes express my own solitude and melancholy, searching for that moment of sublimity, hoping to evoke in the viewer a subjective, emotional response to the natural world. In a pursuit for tranquility and peace, these introspective landscapes offer a respite from the chaos and noise of the modern world. Using landscape as a ubiquitous device for investigating my personal history, I explore the desire to connect, to long for shelter and to belong." Danielle Winger was born in Reno, NV and has spent her life moving throughout the US. She received a Bachelor of Science in Textiles, Merchandising and Apparel Design from Middle Tennessee State University and a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art: Painting from East Tennessee State University. Winger is represented by Red Arrow Gallery in Nashville, TN and James May Gallery in Algoma, Wisconsin. Her work belongs in a number of private collections both nationally and internationally. Sunset
By Greta Van Campen
Located in New Orleans, LA
Triangle with 18 inch sides Greta Van Campen is known for her geometric hard-edged graphic approach to representation. She has traveled across the United States sourcing inspiration from the landscapes, small towns, and cities. Now, with a young family, she gets most of her inspiration close to home. Scenic ocean views and paintings of flowers from her gardens make up the bulk of her new work. She paints in her home studio, beginning each piece with a photograph she has taken. She uses the photo as a reference while drawing from memories of her experiences, sometimes also working from sketches done on location. The image is translated into a painting by first setting large compositional elements and then finding shapes and masking off areas with tape, mixing the desired color of paint, and continuing to tape and paint until the desired amount of detail is reached. This distilled and stylized approach imbues her traditional subject matter with a freshness and modernity. As Van Campen explains, she “figure(s) out how to recreate a version of the natural, atmospheric place by turning it into a more geometric, color and balance-driven scene that is hopefully appealing, interesting, and authentic.” Van Campen was born in and resides in Maine. She received her BFA from Bowdoin College, ME. She is represented by Octavia Art Gallery, LA & TX, and Dowling Walsh Gallery...
