Hailing from Canada’s Pacific Northwest, artist David Wilson’s work has long been informed by the oft rain soaked urban environment he calls home. Whether he’s travelling the globe or exiting through the studio door, Wilson’s experience of his world becomes a celebration of the season of long nights and drenched, reflective streets. Wilson has established himself as one of Canada’s preeminent urban landscape painters with more than 25 solo exhibitions. His work tends to step away from the literal translation of a scene into something more interpretive and evocative. Working primarily with acrylics, Wilson’s paintings are built upon multiple layers of light and colour, infused—beneath the evocative veneer—with the notion of what we know and think we know, or remember. “I tend to shy away from nostalgia and gravitate towards memory. Be it my own memories or something more collective, I’m most interested in those moments we have experienced, or hope to experience, to remind us of who we are and who we will become. I’m not interested in sentimentality. But I am interested in how our histories can act as tools to inform the future we are all moving toward.” – David Wilson SOLO EXHIBITIONS 2022 From There to Here, James Baird Gallery, Pouch Cove, Newfoundland 2022 In From the Cold, Gibson Fine Art, Calgary, Alberta

Joseph Barrett was born in Midland, North Carolina, in 1936 and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. Barrett utilizes a heavy impasto and his palette bears similarities to that of Fern Coppedge and George Sotter. Barrett’s paintings are always found in unique and somewhat charming handmade frames designed by the artist and finished in metal leaf.
A living contemporary of the no longer living “New Hope School” impressionist painters, Joseph Barrett resides outside of New Hope above his old-fashioned antique shop and studio. Entering Barrett’s shop is like taking a step back in time. Inside this cluttered and dusty haven of treasures from the past, is a studio spanning only four by eight feet. This little studio, containing cans of old brushes...
