About the Item
Artist Don F. Ricks was inspired by the natural beauty that surrounded his portion of The West. Whether it be the flat plains, the mighty Rockies, or the gardens so lovingly created around homesteads and ranches, Ricks painted what he saw in all its glory and light. This painting of the Cathedral Group of the Tetons is a fine example of his inspired work. The tops of the mountains are snow capped, and bathed in light. There is a long ray of sun lighting the valley floor at their base, perhaps suggesting later afternoon shadows. The paint is applied liberally in areas to enhance the drama and texture of the rugged landscape.
Born in 1929, Don Frank Ricks studied art at the University of Utah before opening a sign painting business. In the late 1960’s he closed his business in favor of finer brushes to begin his fine art career. He soon opened summer artists workshops out of his home, about an hour from Yellowstone National Park. There he continued to paint while assisting budding artists, as he had been earlier.
This painting, on masonite panel, measures 16” x 20”. It is signed lower left. It is housed in a fine quality wide gilt frame with simple foliate corners and a linen liner. Both the frame and painting are in very good condition with no major issues or repairs to report. There is very minor expected damage to the frame in a couple of spots, as it is about thirty plus years old. The outer framed dimensions are approximately 22” x 26”. The colors of the painting are bright and clear. Overall, it is ready to hang on the wall of your choice to enjoy.

Untitled (Snow-capped Mountains) – Grand Teton National Park, c. 1930s
By Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel
Located in Pasadena, CA
Provenance
Consigned to the gallery by private collectors
Description
Marion Kavanagh was a pupil of William Keith in San Francisco who, upon learning of her move to Southern California, urged her to contact Pasadena artist Elmer Wachtel. A romance blossomed and the two were married in 1904. During their marriage, out of respect for her husband, Marion Wachtel painted in watercolor, giving Elmer Wachtel the honor of painting in the more “serious” medium of oil. After the untimely passing of her husband and a period of grieving, Marion took up oil painting in 1930, working both en plein air and in the studio. This masterful plein air painting is a poetic interpretation of the snow-capped mountains in Grand Teton National Park...
