About the Item

A fine impressionist coastal oil painting by American artist Edward Henry Potthast (1857-1927). Potthast was born in Cincinnati, OH and studied at the McMicken School of Design and at the Cincinnati Academy. He spent a brief time in Europe before becoming established in his native city as a lithographer and illustrator. He moved to New York City and eventually divided his time between illustrations for ‘Harper's and Scribner's magazines, but later gave up illustration for full time fine art. He is well known for his shorescapes, genre paintings and illustrations. Oil on panel, signed lower left, artist address and title inscribed on verso attached paper label “A Rockbound Coast,” and housed in a carved giltwood signed Goodnow frame. Dimensions: 8.25 in H x 10 in W, actual; 13.13 in H x 15 in W x 1 in D, framed. Ref: 8
