About the Item

A superb example of a Barbizon inspired landscape painted by the "Catford Corot" from the late 19th Century. This very striking image shows the artist at the absolute peak of his ability and paying homage to his great inspiration, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, with wonderful brushwork and palette knife flourishes providing a wonderful texture to the paint surface. A very atmospheric work in a handsome substantial frame in ready hang to condition. George Boyle (1842-1930) Cattle watering in a forest glade Signed Oil onpanel 15 x 21 inches without the frame 22 x 28 inches with the frame George Boyle is perhaps the best known English painter inspired by the Barbizon School. In fact he is known as the "Catford Corot" as his paintings have such a close resemblance to the school's main exponent, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot. The "Catford" element of this nickname corresponds to the area near Greenwich, London where he lived for most of his life. He exhibited extensively throughout his life at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Examples of his work can be found in private and public collections internationally, including the collections of the Princeton University Art Museum, the Sheffield Museum, the William Morris Gallery and the National Gallery of Ireland.
