A landscape painter--primarily using a late impressionist loose stroke as his main mode of expression--Leonard drew not only upon French influences, but also the American school of impressionism characterized by Frank Boggs, George C. Aid and the Lyme tonalists: William Metcalf and Guy Wiggins.
George Henry Leonard was born in Boston and studied at Boston Latin Prep. He attended and graduated from Harvard in 1891. He moved to France where he studied under Bouguereau, Gerome, and Aman-Jean. He was a member of: Paris Academy of Art, The Boston Art Club, and American Federation of Art.
He exhibited extensively--including at the "Salon of Paris and Universal Exhibition" 1895, "Boston Art Club" 1896-1909, "Art Institute of Chicago" 1897-1912, "Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts" 1900-1921, "St. Louis Louis Exhibition" 1904, and in Poland Spring Maine, 1909.
He lived in France for many years and traveled in Europe with George Aid (1872-1938) and Charles Bittinger (1897-1970 ) in 1903. His last gallery show was in Boston at the Doll and Richards' Gallery.

Hannig, born in Hirschberg, Germany on 27 February 1883, came to America with his parents at the age of seven. He attended school in the southwest suburbs before the family settled in Chicago. Young Henry enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where Lawton Parker became his mentor. He made ends meet by working in industrial design and illustration.
By 1908 he was a pupil in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where students followed the traditional European drawing curriculum, beginning with the copying of master engravings and drawing after plaster casts, then concentrating on the nude figure.
