About the Item

Nocturne, Venice, 1924 – Gino Albieri (1881–1949) Gino Albieri (Cavarzere, near Venice, 1881 – Rome, 1949) was an Italian painter with a distinctive international career. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, he spent approximately eight years in Cairo as a pupil of the Belgian painter Van Brugge, developing an early sensitivity to atmosphere and the effects of light. Dated 1924, this Venetian nocturne belongs to a mature phase of Albieri’s work, characterized by a sustained interest in nocturnal urban scenes and artificial light. The composition is animated by small, lightly suggested figures, integrated into a setting constructed through a pressed, rapid brushwork. Architecture is suggested rather than defined, while figures and surroundings merge into a unified vision, based on tonal contrasts and compositional rhythm rather than detailed description. This approach favors visual impression and atmosphere, hallmarks of Albieri’s pictorial language during the 1920s. After the First World War, Albieri exhibited widely in Italy and abroad. Several of his works were acquired by the Italian Royal Family and by the Ministries of War and the Navy. In 1926, with government authorization, he executed eighteen paintings from the air aboard the M2 dirigible, today regarded as among the earliest Italian experiments in aerial painting. He also took part in the 23rd Venice Biennale in 1942. Oil on panel. Signed and dated 1924, with signature also on the reverse.
