Scope of Hendrik Frans van Lint, (Antwerp, 1684 - Rome, 1763), City view

About the Item

Scope of Hendrik Frans van Lint, (Antwerp, 1684 - Rome, 1763) City view with river, boats and bridge in the background Oil on panel, 14 x 20.5 cm Framed, 36 x 47 cm The Flemish Hendrik Frans van Lint (Antwerp 1684 - Rome 1763), grandson of the Antwerp-born Vedutist Peter (Antwerp 1609 - 1690) and father of Giacomo (Rome 1723 - 1790), although born in Flanders and conducted the first part of his training there, appears best known for his work in the Italian sphere: the Dutch painter specialized in Rome in the genres of landscape and veduta. The Roman sojourn represented for van Lint, as it did for many other Nordic artists residing in the Urbe at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, an indispensable prerequisite for bringing himself up to date in art and expanding his circle of commissions. Hendrik Frans, a landscape and vedutista, stayed in the papal capital for two-thirds of his life: here his son Giacomo was born, who followed in his father's footsteps by producing almost exclusively views of Rome. In the Urbe, Hendrik Frans, better known in Italy as "Lo Studio," became an emulation of the Dutch vedutista Gaspar van Wittel, known in Italy mainly under the pseudonym Vanvitelli, and produced Roman and Lazio views and landscapes of particular imagination, following the "ideal" and "classical" poetics of Claude Lorrain's and Gaspard Dughet's seventeenth-century painting. This type of production, entirely for the market, became standardized in the last years of the artist's activity, who loved to portray both the glorious remains of ancient Rome and the new monuments of modern Rome. Van Lint's works can be made to fall broadly into two categories: idealized, Arcadian landscapes populated by a wide range of picturesque figures, and purely topographical, highly realistic views. The follower of van Lint who makes this beautiful Town View with river, boats and bridge in the background is certainly inspired by this second strand of the Antwerp-born artist's production. The portrayal of the landscape enacted by the artist is lenticular and absolutely devoid of idealization: the painter presents the banks of the Tiber, showing even the crudest aspects of the reality of the time, in which stately palaces and industrious boatmen coexist with paupers and situations of degradation.
