About the Item
"Light Moving Across", by American artist Ken Elliott is a radiant, large-scale landscape that captures the poetic energy of nature through bold abstraction and vibrant color. A series of atmospheric brushstrokes in sky blue, lavender, celadon green, and soft gray swirl together to form an expressive field of loosely rendered blossoms or cloudlike bursts. The surface is alive with layered paint and gestural motion, evoking the feeling of sunlight filtering through trees or flowers caught in a breeze.
Balancing minimalism with depth, this work invites the viewer into a meditative state—both calming and emotionally resonant. Elliott’s distinctive approach to landscape is evident here: a harmony of abstraction and form, intuition and control.

Ken Elliott is an abstract landscape artist based in Colorado. With over 40 years in the art business, his knowledge spans well beyond the easel. Of his work, Elliott says, "My focus is the landscape and its rich store of ideas and inspiration. I am compelled to work from the trees, skies, lakes and streams in their endless variations. I don’t try to recreate nature (even Monet & Wolf Kahn said they never got it right), or attempt storytelling. Instead, the works are simplifications and exaggerations of nature. There was a time when I felt the tyranny of the landscape. That is, I felt limited by making pictures of a place. Now, instead of making pictures, I am free to make paintings - art that comes from nature but is far more reliant on the strategies of making good art objects."
Elliott's book, “Manifesting Your Creative Life,” has inspired countless artists. I don’t paint places. I paint the feeling of the place—what color, shape, and energy feels true.”

Ken Elliott
Ken Elliot works with oil paints and pastels to bring abstracted scenes of nature to life. The Colorado artist’s frequently luminous landscape paintings, which feature trees, rivers, lakes, mountains and skies, ripple with energy. Elliot finds endless inspiration in the variation of the world around him, and the prolific colorist’s works are held in thousands of personal and private collections.
Elliot didn't begin painting until late in life. In 1967, he graduated from the University of Houston, where he studied art and advertising. His subsequent jobs as an art restorer, a picture framer and an art dealer in Texas exposed him to many styles and a range of mediums. Finally, in 1987, Elliot moved to San Francisco to embark on a painting career. He started by painting breathtaking sunlit scenes of Texas and California.
After a few years of teaching himself new skills and techniques, Elliot was accepted into a master class at the Santa Fe Art Institute. The class was taught by acclaimed painter Wolf Kahn — who studied with the legendary teacher and Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Hofmann — and Kahn’s insights have since proven indispensable for Elliot.
Elliot currently lives in Colorado, where he continues to create more Impressionistic landscapes. Sometimes he isn’t merely working on one painting — the artist usually has a number of works going at once and has said that the paintings can inspire one another. Elliot regularly exhibits at galleries in Colorado, New Mexico, Connecticut, Texas and New York.
