About the Item

Consigned to the gallery, Pasadena, California; By descent to a private collector, Encino, California; Acquired by a private collector, Palo Alto, San Carlos, and Oceanside, California Description This intimate plein air watercolor captures a quiet, shaded pool bordered by dense foliage. Latimer’s loose yet controlled brushwork conveys a sense of natural spontaneity, while his layered greens and muted earth tones reveal his deep familiarity with Northern California’s riparian landscapes. The delicate rendering of light across the water’s surface, framed by overhanging trees, reflects his sensitivity to atmospheric effects—a hallmark of his work. The composition evokes the secluded, meditative qualities of a hidden woodland pool, likely painted en plein air at a location Latimer knew well from his many painting excursions in Northern California. Historical Significance A central figure in early 20th century West Coast landscape painting, Lorenzo Palmer Latimer was celebrated for his refined approach to watercolor and his dedication to painting directly from nature. Based in San Francisco, he was an influential teacher and mentor, particularly in Nevada, where he founded the Latimer Art Club in Reno in 1921. His works are held in numerous public and private collections and remain sought after by collectors of California Impressionism and early Nevada regional art. Framing Framed by Warner Roberts Framing in Palo Alto, California (label on verso). The work is presented in a softly toned speckled wood frame with a gilt inner lip and a sage green archival mat. The framing harmonizes with the painting’s palette and is executed to museum standards, using acid free materials to ensure long term preservation. UNFRAMED: 7" x 5.5" FRAMED: 15" x 13" x .5" Condition Report The watercolor is in very good condition, commensurate with age. The paper appears stable, with no visible tears, creases, or water damage. Colors remain fresh and vibrant, showing no signs of fading. There is no apparent foxing or staining within the image area. Exhibited Scenic Route: A Half Century of California Discovery, 1900-1950, American Legacy Fine Arts, Pasadena, California, August 15 - October 11, 2025

Bodega Bay, c 1906
By Jessie Arms Botke
Located in Pasadena, CA
Consigned to the gallery, Pasadena, California; By descent to a private collector, Encino, California; Acquired in 1998 by a private collector, San Carlos, Palo Alto, and Oceanside, California; From William A. Karges Fine Art, Carmel, California Description This charming watercolor captures a sweeping view of Bodega Bay, California, rendered with the refined draftsmanship and decorative sensibility for which Jessie Arms Botke is renowned. While best known for her gilded avian compositions, Botke’s landscapes are comparatively rare and reveal a more personal side of her artistic vision. Here, the viewer peers over the distinctive red turret of a Victorian home toward the curving estuary, where land meets sea beneath a soft blue sky. Delicate washes and crisp detailing convey the texture of the shoreline, the undulating water, and the surrounding structures, evoking the calm yet lively spirit of a coastal fishing village in the early 20th century. The warm terracotta tones of the foreground architecture contrast beautifully with the cool blues of the water and the distant hills, creating a balanced, harmonious scene. Although no journal entry or record confirms a specific trip to Bodega Bay, Botke may have painted this work, circa 1906, during the period when she was offered a round-trip passage from the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway to travel from Chicago to Arizona and California in exchange for paintings depicting scenes of the West. The style and vantage point suggest direct observation, making it likely that she visited the town and painted the scene en plein air. With its architectural detail, vibrant palette, and compositional harmony, this work stands as a significant example of Botke’s lesser seen yet highly collectible works on paper. Jessie Arms Botke is recognized as one of the most important women artists in the early California art...
