Pourquoi partir? - Post Impressionist Still Life Landscape Oil by Marcel Dyf

c.1980

About the Item

Signed oil on canvas still life in landscape circa 1980 by sought after French post impressionist painter Marcel Dyf. The work depicts a view of a harbour from beyond the open green shutters where sailing boats are moored. On the window sill there is a green, glass vase filled with flowers and a plate with pears and grapes. In the centre of of the sill is a bottle of ink and a pen resting on a piece of paper which reads "Pourquoi partir?" (Why leave?). Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 33"x38" Unframed: 24"x29" Provenance: Private collection - United States Marcel Dyf abandoned engineering to become a painter. He spent some months studying in a Paris studio, then explored Provence and settled first in Arles and later in Paris. He then divided his time between the Paris area and Cannes. Dyf's art derived from classical tradition and from moderate Post-Impressionism. His landscapes, which form the greater part of his output, are often painted in shades of ochre and in horizontal planes, with additional matter worked in. He produced many in the Île-de-France, in Provence where he lived, in Brittany and Normandy, in Venice, Morocco and Israel. He also painted portraits and figures, in the 1950s often of gypsy women, and frequently of his wife Claudine. He produced decorative work in the town halls of Stes-Maries de la Mer (Camargue) and St-Martin-de-Crau (Arles), and painted frescoes in the Musée Arlaten in Arles in 1936. In Paris he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, the Salon d'Automne and the Tuileries. He also had solo shows in Paris, three of them at the Galerie Petrides, and from 1956 in London at the Frost and Reed Gallery. In 1995 the General Council of Bouches-du-Rhône put on a retrospective exhibition of his early work, and in 1999 an exhibition at L'Espace Dyf in Bois-d'Arcy commemorated the hundredth anniversary of his birth. Gloxinias - Post Impressionist Flowers Still Life Oil by Anne Redpath
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed and titled still life oil painting circa 1950 by Scottish post impressionist painter Anne Redpath. The piece depicts a vase of deep purple gloxinias - the green foliage set against a purple, blue and red background. Signature: Signed lower right and titled verso Dimensions: Framed: 27"x31" Unframed: 20"x24" Provenance: The Lefevre Gallery, London (labels verso) Sotheby's, Gleneagles, 2 September 1998, lot 1503 Anne Redpath was the daughter of a textiles designer. From 1913 to 1919 she attended the Edinburgh College of Art. She continued her training in Paris, Florence and Siena. When she got married she accompanied her husband, the architect James Beattie Michie, to France in 1920, and stopped painting to look after her family. In 1934 she returned to Edinburgh and took up painting again. Various academies presented her with awards. From 1919 onward she exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy exhibitions, but only showed her work there again regularly from 1935, and then practically every year until she died, each time with several works. She was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1952. She also took part in many group exhibitions but mainly held solo shows. In her early career she produced mostly still-lifes, then later focused on landscape painting. She was active in Paris, the South of France, Italy, Spain, Brittany and Corsica. In her work she was clearly influenced by the inter-war School of Paris, and her painting is tasteful, decorative, and in a tradition somewhere between Maurice Brianchon and André Marchand. She was considered one of the most important Scottish painters of her time.
