"Migration," (2018) by wildlife artist Alexis Kandra is an oil painting on an asymmetrical wood panel, measuring 36" X 48". The painting is gilded with metal foils, including gold, pewter, black and holographic foiling. Alexis highlights the migration of a mother and baby polar bear with arctic birds overhead. The expanse of the landscape shows arctic mountain ranges in the background and on another plane the mama polar bear and her cub walk upon foliage underfoot in rich sage and claret red hues. The flora and fauna and the landscape itself are all beautifully rendered and fit under the rubric of contemporary realism, save the inverse color palettes in various parts of the composition. Michele Kishita's abstract landscape paintings on wood panel collectively describe the pale freeze of mid-winter; the new growth of spring; the calm and fluidity of bodies of water at specific moments of the day; and the interplay of light, shadow, and speed recalling movement through the urban landscape. Stylistically, Kishita’s work is deeply influenced by the strong lines and compressed space of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, particularly the landscapes and natural world imagery of Hiroshige and Hokusai. In addition to creating her own work, Kishita is a Japanese print consultant who authenticates, translates, and appraises woodblock prints. Kishita received her MFA and BFA degrees from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She has held artist residencies in Iceland, Russia, and New Mexico, and her work has been featured in exhibitions across the US, in Russia, and in the United Arab Emirates. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of Toyota, Kaiser Permanente, Park Towne Place, Temple University, Drexel University, Texas Tech University, the University of the Arts.
