Philippe Swyncop, Fontarabie, Oil Painting

1924

About the Item

This early 20th-century oil painting by Belgian artist Philippe Swyncop (1878-1949) depicts a colourful street in Fontarrabie, Spain. Fontarrabie, or Hondarribia as it’s known in Spanish, is a charming historic town situated close to the French border. Its oldest streets are surrounded by a 15th-century wall and entered via a gateway that resembles a tiny castle. Here, the view is taken from the Denda Kalea looking towards the impressive 16th-century Gothic church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion. One can imagine Swyncop enjoying his stay, weaving along the undulant cobbles and pausing to feast at the various eateries. It’s an inspiring location with vantage points near the church that provide an elevated view of the enchanting Bay of Chingudi. Signed/dated lower left and held within a later frame.

Daniel Sherrin, Heath Landscape With Sunset
By Daniel Sherrin
Located in Cheltenham, GB
This early 20th-century autumnal oil painting by British artist Daniel Sherrin (1869-1940) depicts a rugged heath landscape under the glow of a setting sun. Sherrin was an accomplished painter of landscapes and maritime subjects. He spent the majority of his life in Seasalter, near Whitstable in Kent, where he became a local celebrity of repute. His father, John Sherrin RI RWS (1819-1896), was a painter of delicate still lifes in watercolour and trained by the distinguished William Henry Hunt (1790-1864). However, it’s unlikely that he provided any early tuition for his son as he actively dissuaded the young lad from entering the profession. As such, Sherrin was instead apprenticed to Peter Moore...

20th Century Oil painting, a View of Chinese Junks at sea.
By Ken Moroney
Located in Woodbury, CT
20th Century Oil painting of an Impressionist scene of Chinese Junks at sea. Moroney was born on the 14th of February 1949 in South London. Of Anglo Irish parentage, his father was typical of his generation and worried about Ken’s artistic temperament which he viewed as effeminate. As a result, Ken took up boxing and won a gold medal for South London in his teens. His art continued to flourish with his trademark striking use of color. His main medium oils and he favors romantic subjects of Edwardian times. Ken has traveled extensively and spent 2 years working for major galleries in New York. The Royal Academy nominated him in 1976 as being one of the few promising young artists to emerge this century: "Ken Moroney has considerable talent, any painting purchased now can only be seen as a sound long term investment." Ken Moroney's work now hangs in many important collections and has had paintings exhibited at The Royal Academy (London), and the Kline Galleries (Canada). The painting came from a private collection and previously came from Duncan Miller...
