"Lobster Pots" Gloucester Massachusetts Seashore Scene Oil Painting with Figure
Located in New York, NY
Impressionist seashore landscape with figure of fisherman, lobster pots, and crashing waves in Gloucester Massachusetts. Willet has portrayed this piece in a most dramatic and energetic way and has packed much feeling into this miniature work. It is almost as if we are there in the waves in the early morning, with the man and his lobster pots. Christopher is known for capturing the beauty and simplicity of an earlier time of the 20th Century; old New York, families working together, villages and farms and friends taking walks together. Many are depicted in recognizable historical settings and this piece is an excellent example of this. Christopher engages his audience with the quick use of brushwork and great attention to picking up the energy passionately of his subjects. The piece comes housed in a decorated dark tone wood frame and it is ready to be displayed with hanging wire on verso. Art measures 5 x 7 inches Frame measures 7.25 x 9.25 inches Christopher Willett...

"Sunrise, Old Farm, Rushland"
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Illustrated in "Joseph Barrett, The Prime Years 1970s - 1990s", pg. 58, plate #067. Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Joseph Barrett (1936 – ) Joseph Barrett was born in Midland, North Carolina, in 1936 and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. Barrett utilizes a heavy impasto and his palette bears similarities to that of Fern Coppedge and George Sotter. Barrett’s paintings are always found in unique and somewhat charming handmade frames designed by the artist and finished in metal leaf. A living contemporary of the no longer living “New Hope School” impressionist painters, Joseph Barrett resides outside of New Hope above his old-fashioned antique shop and studio. Entering Barrett’s shop is like taking a step back in time. Inside this cluttered and dusty haven of treasures from the past, is a studio spanning only four by eight feet. This little studio, containing cans of old brushes...

Along the Shore, Staten Island, New York
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Along the Shore, Staten Island, New York" 1937, is an oil painting on canvas board by Italian/American artist Xavier Barile, 1891-1981. It is signed and dated at the lower right corner by the artist. Also signed, dated, and titled on the back. The canvas board size is 12 x 16 inches, framed size is 16.25 x 20.25 inches. Framed in a wooden gold frame, with gold bevel and fabric liner. It is in excellent condition, especially considering the age. About the artist: Xavier J Barile was a Social Realist painter, teacher, lecturer, graphic artist, and writer. He was born March 18, 1891, in Tufo, Italy. His love of beauty manifested itself at a very early age. During his early teens, he used to design monograms for the young girls of his home town, Tufo, Italy, to embroider on their most precious possession, their hope chest and trousseau. In 1907, his mother brought him, his two younger brothers and two sisters to New York, to join their father who had been in New York for several years, preparing the way. He quickly learned English and spent some time helping his father, who was earning a living for the family as a tailor. Having learned English well, Barile then enrolled in the Evening Art Classes at Cooper Union Institute in New York. In due course he enrolled in the Art Students League, New York City. Here he came under the influence of John Sloan, Reginald Marsh and Victor Perard as teachers and George Luks, Robert Henri and Everett Shinn of "the Eight" as friends and colleagues. In 1939 John Sloan dedicated his book, Gist of Art as follows, "To my old friend, first monitor of my first class at the Art Students League 1914." This friendship and mutual regard lasted until Sloan's death in 1951. Of course, it was only natural that Barile should be a part of the "Ashcan School," painting the New York Scene. During this time that he was on his own he worked with all mediums - oil, watercolor, pastel, casein, charcoal, etc. - and he did some fine work with monotypes. It was during these years, the 20's and 30's, that he began to exhibit in such places as the Whitney Studio Club (forerunner of the Whitney Museum of American Art), The Kit Kat Club, The Anderson Gallery, The Cincinnati Museum, The New Mexico Museum, National Society of Painters in Casein, The Salmagundi Club and many other exhibits throughout the United States. He is currently represented in The National Collection of Fine Arts (NCFA) Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. In the mid 30's, like many another struggling artist, XJB worked on the WPA Art Project. One of the murals he worked on is in the U.S. Customs House, Bowling Green, N.Y.C. In this project he collaborated with Reginald Marsh who was the supervisor of this phase of the work. The years until 1939 were spent working in all parts of the United States and in conducting his own classes for aspiring artists. In 1939, on the recommendation of John Sloan, he became the founder, first teacher and Chairman of The Department of Fine Arts, Pueblo Junior College, Pueblo Colorado...

Landscape with people fishing
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Landscape with People Fishing" 1978, is an oil painting on hard board by Polish/American artist Morris Katz, 1932-2010. It is signed and dated at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork (Hard Board) size is 20 x 24 inches, framed size is 28 x 31.75 inches. Framed in original wooden gold frame, with fabric liner and gold trim. The artwork is in excellent condition, the frame is in very good condition. About the artist: On May 9th, 1988, the New York artist set a new world record by painting a 12- by 16-inch canvas of a child in the snow in just half a minute. (It took an additional eight seconds to frame it.) And that wasn’t the only distinction granted to Katz by the Guinness Book of World Records—his name appeared alongside Pablo Picasso’s under the heading for “Most Prolific Painters.” The Spanish master is estimated to have completed some 13,500 paintings in his life; when Katz died in 2010 at age 78, he was credited with 225,000. Katz’s preposterously productive career began in the small Polish village where he was born in 1932. He started studying under a German painter at age 13, but following World War II he earned a diploma in carpentry instead. In 1949, at the age of 17, he travelled to the United States. It was there that he picked up a paintbrush again, while studying at the Art Students League of New York and showing in the Village. “Soon, I decided I was good enough—compared to others, excellent enough—to make my living as an artist,” he said. It was during those years that he developed the techniques that would eventually land him in the record books. He tossed out his paintbrushes and replaced them with palette knives and toilet paper, which he used to stipple the paint. “Soon I picked up speed,” Katz said. “If you know which way you’re travelling, then you can run.” He made art in bulk, buying up canvases by the thousands and paint by the gallon. He went through some 10,000 rolls of toilet paper per year; he often wore out palette knives. Katz branded his method as “instant art.” Charles Salzberg, writing in New York magazine in 1978, urged readers, “Think of him, if you will, as the McDonald’s of the art world”—fast, cheap, and ubiquitous. He wore a green beret, paint-splattered pants, and a shirt emblazoned with the words “Morris Katz - World’s Most Prolific Artist.” It was a title that came with a price—he worked 18-hour days into his 60s, sometimes from his Greenwich Village studio and other times as a performer at hotels across the Catskills. He would often visit three different hotels in the same day, waking up at 7 a.m. and returning home as late as 1 a.m. His show was as much about the painting as it was the one-liners: “These are the highlights—you can tell because they’re high up on the painting,” he might say. Audiences gobbled up the jokes and the works, often paying less than $50 for a painting. “I give them a fresh painting like a fresh bagel,” he said. Photographer David M. Spindel first met Katz on assignment. “They’d call him mashugana—that’s the Yiddish word for a little bit crazy,” he told Artsy. The pair soon became friends, and Spindel ended up attending several of the artist’s hotel shows. “There were a lot of people from the hotel who were sitting in the room and he set up his easel and his toilet paper and paints and knocked out paintings one after another,” Spindel said. “Just a couple of minutes for each painting, usually. If he was kibitzing with the people in the audience then it took a lot longer. He was always clowning around.” His act was ready-made for television; he appeared on 60 Minutes, David Letterman, and Oprah, among other programs. And Katz didn’t just make instant art—he taught it as well. In 1987, the New Yorker sent a writer to attend one of his speed-painting classes at the Notre Dame School on West 79th Street. A dozen eager students watched in admiration as he whipped up a mountain landscape, asking for advice on how, exactly, to hold their toilet paper for maximum artistic effect. For those who couldn’t make it to Manhattan for a lesson, he published a book—Paint Good & Fast (1985)—with a title as straightforward as his philosophy on art. “Life goes faster and faster,” he wrote. “The fine arts must keep pace. This art will one day be...

"Marshland Cottages in Autumn" American Mid Century Oil Painting Landscape
Located in New York, NY
A wonderful depiction of cottages in a Marshland with a mountain view landscape in the country side. For this beautiful depiction of the mountains, we find distinct elements that are unique to the earlier works of Marie Berger. Among other things, Marie Berger's art is notable for its surrealist elements. In Still Life with Figure in a Desert Landscape, for example, she combines the seemingly incongruous images of a foreground still life composition with the almost infinite lines of perspective of the desert environment. The final result is one of provoking imagery and emotion. With joyful colors, this piece is filled with bold brushstrokes and impressive marks. Comes housed in a beautiful wood frame. Ready to hang with wire on verso. Art measures 18 x 24 inches Framed measures 23 x 29 inches A native of Fort Worth, Marie Friedman Berger was born March 9, 1913, the daughter of Will and Minnie Cohen Friedman. She was a graduate of Central High School, now R. L. Paschal, and attended Washington University, St. Louis School of Art. Marie married Jack Henry Berger on June 21, 1939, in Dallas; a marriage that lasted nearly 61 years. Mr. Berger died in 2000. Marie was an internationally renowned artist. Her works have been published by the Metropolitan Art Gallery of New York and shown as one of America's only artists in Italian art galleries. She was a recipient of the annual Benedictine Art Award. For many years she worked along side her late husband operating the Fashion Furniture Gallery on Camp Bowie Blvd. Marie Berger was a longtime member of Beth-El Congregation and she was also a full member of the Texas Fine Arts Association (Regional Director) and the Texas Watercolor Society. Among the awards presented to her for her art were the Benedictine Award, New York, and the Texas Fine Arts Jurors Award. She also owned and managed the Marie Berger Gallery, Fort Worth, which promoted the works of many rising American and Mexican artists during the 1950's and 1960's. She studied at Texas Christian University, and then at the St. Louis School of Fine Art and at Washington University, Missouri, which was founded as the Saint Louis School and Museum of Fine Arts in 1879 as part of Washington University in St. Louis. Her most common media is the use of oil, acrylic, watercolor, etching, lithograph, collagraph. During her successful career, she exhibited internationally at such institutions as the Bateau Lavar Gallery, Rome, the Rassagna permanente d'arte contemporanea, Veterbo, Italy, the Laguna Gloria, Austin, Texas, the Oklahoma Art...

"Summer Landscape, " Joseph DeCamp, Boston Ten American Impressionists
By Joseph Rodefer DeCamp
Located in New York, NY
Joseph Rodefer DeCamp (1858 - 1923) Summer Landscape Oil on board 11 x 15 inches Signed lower right Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 5, 1858, Joseph DeCamp began his artistic career in his teens and remained active throughout his life. Although he initially painted landscapes, Decamp became a renowned and respected portraitist. He was famous for his images of men of high society and women within domestic interiors. Decamp began his artistic training in 1873 when he enrolled in the McMicken School of Art and Design in Cincinnati. The head of the school, Thomas Satterwhite Noble, was a European-trained painter whose "insistence on rigorous draftsmanship, true to the academic manner in which he had been trained, exerted a lasting influence on DeCamp." DeCamp studied under Noble for five years, but was also a student of Frank Duveneck at the Ohio Mechanics Institute. He adopted Duveneck's bold, realistic style and many of his paintings executed throughout the 1870s and 1880s reflect this influence. Like most American artists of his generation, DeCamp went abroad to study. In 1878, following in the footsteps of Duveneck and other Midwesterners, he traveled to Munich to attend the Royal Bavarian Academy. Soon after his arrival, however, he gravitated away from the academy and towards Duveneck and eventually followed his mentor to Florence and Venice. During these years, DeCamp focused on landscape and portraiture as his primary subjects. These themes would continue to occupy the artist when he returned to America in 1883. When DeCamp arrived back in the United States in 1883, he first settled in Cincinnati, but soon moved to Cleveland to teach at what is now Case Western Reserve University. He then relocated once more to the Boston area, where he would remain for most of his life. DeCamp began teaching at Wellesley Female Academy and, in the fall of 1885, began as an instructor at the School of Drawing and Painting at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He quickly established himself as one of the leading figures in the Boston art community and became a founding member of The Ten American Painters, formulated in 1897. This group included Childe Hassam, John Henry Twachtman, Julian Alden Weir, Frank Benson, Thomas Dewing, Willard Metcalf, Robert Reid, Edward Simmons...
