"Moonlight Phantasy" comes from a lovely wood near my home in the High Peak. When the moon is full you can walk in the evening and it feels almost as light as day. The wood is quiet with dark tones of the trees creating shadows in the pale moonlight. An original artwork, one of a kind, this painting has been created with high quality acrylic paints on deep edged canvas. I begin with observation of the place making notes and taking photographs to work from in the studio. From these beginnings I work intuitively, painting some base layers with a brush and then impasto techniques layer on layer applied with a palette knife. Harnessing optical mixing techniques employed by the impressionists and some of the methods of the old masters such as scumbling and glazing. I continue working until the painting reaches a natural conclusion. The result is a contemporary painting, which lies somewhere between abstraction and realism. The painting continues round the sides, a frame is not needed and it is ready to hang.

Composition:
The painting is freely inspired by Lake Carezza in the Dolomites. The painting shows a lake with the trees of the surrounding forest reflected in it, whith a sweeping vista of the Dolomites, with the mountains rising majestically in the distance, The mountains are shrouded in a delicate veil of mist, creating an ethereal and otherworldly atmosphere. As the sun begins to rise, its pink golden rays illuminating the peaks and casting shadows across the valleys.
Color Palette:
The color palette is soft and muted, with shades of blue and green for the lake, gray/purple, carminium, light blue, and many different shadows of "green" for the trees that as well receive the first ray of sun on the top. The mist is rendered in delicate washes of blue carminium red, green and white, creating a sense of haziness and ethereality. The rising sun is fare out of the scene.
Texture:
The texture of the painting is varied, with smooth washes of color for the mist, and far trees, and delicate details for the other fare mountains and for the trees.

Artist Bio:
Viktor Butko was born in 1978 in Moscow, into a family of artists. He often visited the studio of his grandfather, the famous artist Victor Chulovich, and watched the creation of paintings. As you may imagine, this has inspired him to start painting. Viktor’s first steps in art were directed by his grandfather and his parents, artists Nickolay Butko and Marina Chulovich, he then studied at the Moscow Art School, which is known for a high level of training. After completing his training at the art school, Butko painted at the Academic Dacha of Artists, created by the great Russian artist Ilya Repin for students of the Academy of Fine Arts. There he worked under the guidance of famous artists Alexey Gritsay and Tkachev brothers, which had a big impact on his creativity.
Viktor’s first solo show was held in the United States, in 2002 at the McCarthey Gallery, one of the foremost dealers in the United States for Russian Impressionist art. This marked the beginning of a long cooperation with the gallery. Later, in 2016, He took part in an international plein air event, which was organized by American painter Ben Fenske and art dealer Laura Grenning. "This piece is all about summer, all-year-round," says artist Marie-Eve Champagne. "Palm trees, beaches, green grass, evening walks, bike rides by the sea, fedoras, and all of that. Recollections of past summers, of childhood vacations, of cherished escapes. Greens, yellows, and blues. And peaches, purples, oranges." Part of Marie-Eve's series exploring coastal life and the warmth of weather, venue, and feeling.
About the Artist
Southern California transplant Marie-Eve is heavily influenced by the region’s natural environment and beauty. She works from a studio inside her San Diego home where she enjoys looking out the window to draw inspiration from the sunlight’s effect on the landscape. Marie-Eve’s work occupies a unique space at the intersection of fine art and stylized modern design, utilizing both representational and abstracted subjects. She juxtaposes organic forms with clean planes, thick outlines, and blocks of color that delight the eye. Using limited but carefully selected color palettes, Marie-Eve joyfully articulates concepts and elements of the natural world through a clean, modernist aesthetic.
