About the Item
Oil on artist board painting by the American artist, Winfield Scott Clime. Signed lower left. Titled verso. Partial Lyme Association exhibition label verso. In good condition. Framed with custom hardcarved and gold leafed frame in mint condition. Overall 23 by 27 inches.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1881, Winfield Scott Clime trained at both the Corcoran Art School and the Art Students League in New York. While primarily identified with the Old Lyme Art Colony, Clime built the early stages of his career in Washington, DC where he, along with Charles Seaton (1865-1926), co-founded a group originally known as “The Ramblers” in 1916, though in 1919 they took on the more formal name, the Landscape Club of Washington. After a brief stop in Jersey City, New Jersey, Clime eventually came to Connecticut and it was while he was living in Old Lyme that Clime reached the peak of his career. He exhibited at notable venues such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, Corcoran Gallery, National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Lyme Art Association. He passed away in Old Lyme in 1958.

Winfield Scott Clime
Winfield Scott Clime, influenced by Impressionism, was a painter of anecdotal rural landscapes of country dwellings and rural activities. His "Winter Harvest", for example, depicts workers cutting ice blocks on a frozen pond to be stored in straw for use during the summer, as does "The Stone Mill Ice House". The former painting was exhibited in 2001 in the exhibition, "Painter's Paradise: A Land Distinctly Lyme", at the Florence Griswold Museum, in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Clime was a co-founder of the Washington (D.C.) Society of Landscape Painters in 1913, one of the oldest artists' organizations in the Mid-Atlantic region. He and Charles Seaton met by chance while painting outdoors. By 1916, calling themselves the Ramblers, their numbers had grown. In 1919, the organization was formally named the Landscape Club of Washington. Clime also painted in Cragsmoor, New York, in the picturesque Hudson River Valley. Winfield Scott Clime was also a photographer, who was on the scene in July 1909 at Fort Myer, Virginia when Wilbur and Orville Wright made a flight as part of their tour to introduce and solidify support for the airplane. Paul Edward Garber, the first curator of the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum, recalls carrying Clime's bag of photography supplies on that important day.

Louis H Richardson [1853-1923]
American Impressionist :
Louis H. Richardson was born in New Bedford, MA, where he lived and worked until his death in 1923. Richardson was a self-taught Impressionist artist, most known for his sensitive paintings of the landscape surrounding New Bedford and the Dartmouth area. From his shanty shack studio at Salters Point in South Dartmouth, he would paint the wetlands and feature water, trees, the sky and land. In 1917, Richardson was part of a two-man show in New York City with artist Clifford W. Ashley at the Arlington Art Galleries on Madison Avenue. Of his show, The New Bedford Sunday Standard wrote: “His style is so absolutely his own that the simple mention of his name recalls to mind vividly the salt marshes, the soft browns of silent reaches near the sea, wind-blown inlets, flying clouds. … Some of it reaches a height of charm and truth that it would be impossible to surpass.” Richardson believed in the art community and founded the New Bedford Arts Club and its successor the New Bedford Fine Arts Society.
When not painting, Richardson worked at the New Bedford Water Company and later as a plumbing inspector for the city’s Board of Health. He was an avid baseball player and would be known as “the Babe Ruth of New Bedford.”
On his death, the local newspaper declared him “one of the best-known artists in New Bedford” and “one of the art pioneers in building up a more widespread appreciation of art in the community.”
His work is in the permanent collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum...
