About the Item
MERCURY WAGON Realist Light and Shadow Oil on Panel Texas Livestock 16" x 20"
Mercury Wagon is a 16 by 20 oil on panel painting of the famous Mercury Wagon that many children had growing up in the USA. Here is the history of the company that built the Murray wagon:
J. W. Murray founded the Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company in 1919. Its first products, fenders and gas tanks, were purchased by automobile manufacturers. In 1923, Murray introduced its Steelcraft Steel toy line that featured juvenile vehicles such as pedal cars and wagons. During the Depression, Murray expanded its line to include bicycles.
During the 1930s, Murray assigned a variety of names to its wagons – Murray, Playboy, Speed Boy, Silver Streak, and Steelcraft. Murray also produced individual brand products for stores and catalog manufacturers such as Sears, Roebuck, and Company and for toy wholesalers. This policy continued in the post-World War II period.
Murray hired Viktor Schreckengost as an industrial designer. While there is no direct proof he is responsible for the design of the Murray-type wagon, its streamline appearance suggests his influence.
In the mid-1950s, Murray moved its operations from Cleveland, Ohio, to Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Production began in Lawrenceburg in 1956. In 1998, Murray was acquired by Tomkins PLC. The ownership of the company changed several times in the 1990s. Bicycle production ceased in 1999. On September 30, 2005, when the Lawrenceburg plant closed, it was producing lawn mowers.
He is also known for his pet portraits by commission (send message). Custom Framed

Garrett Middaugh is a regional landscape painter working in oils and pastels whose subject matter varies from the mountains and desert of west Texas to the wetlands along the Texas coast, with a strong focus on Texas forests and trees. His palette is muted, stark, embracing the neutral colors of everyday experience. Avoiding the romantic, his landscapes are often painted at high noon or in the dead of winter. He paints in a fluid hyper realist style and feels most influenced by other landscape artists such as Neil Welliver and Rackstraw Downes. He sees landscape painting as a form of meditation, projecting outward, while solving equations and mapping the scene, realizing accuracy of objects and relationships, of light, color, textures, distances.
"Landscape painting is for me a means of projecting outward, of meditating, examining the here and now of place. The process often feels similar to the satisfaction of solving math equations, intuitively realizing accuracy of objects and relationships, of light, color, textures, distances. For the most part I paint Texas. For several years I devoted a significant amount of time to painting its forests -- the complexity of forest alleviated my sense and the nearness and density of growth was comforting. I have also ventured into west Texas and Big Bend, and occasionally have attempted to capture the mesmerizing serenity of central Texas farm and ranchland." "Lunch Break" Texas Hill Country
Barbara and her husband Chuck moved to Fredericksburg in 2005 after living many years in Louisiana, where she taught art at Baton Rouge Lutheran School. Soon after moving home to Texas, she began painting seriously. She has studied with Ian Roberts, Kevin Macpherson, Jill Carver, Lori Putnam, and (of course!) Chuck Mauldin. Barbara’s work has been accepted in several art events, such as the Women Artists of the West National Show, Contemporary Masters Invitational Art Show in Fredericksburg, the Mountain Oyster Club Art Show, the Plein Air Artists Colorado National Juried Art Exhibition, The Museum of Western Art (Kerrville, TX) “The Party” Art Exhibition and Sale, and others.
Her paintings are characterized by color. “I like to emphasize the color that I see, as a creative and emotional response to the landscape.” She works with a limited palette, using a small number of pigments to mix colors, which results in beautiful color harmony.
Barbara has focused her attention on the Texas landscape, especially on prickly pear cactus. Cactus is fun to paint. It has a multitude of interesting colors, which are an expression of the harshness of the environment and the amount of direct sun. In spring the colors are lighter and more mellow, and the flowers of late spring are a vibrant yellow and rose, sometimes orange. She enjoys plein air work, accepting the challenges of color, design, and the environment (critters and weather). Texas abounds with variety and inspiration; there is always another painting just around the corner!
Her interest in art had always been a part of the fabric of her life. She works mainly in oil, and she also dabbles in pastels, watercolor, church banner...
