From 1969 to 1978, he also taught art in the schools of Saint-Cyprien-village and Saint-Cyprien-Plage. Germain Bonel's painting is both expressionist and decorative. Georges-Henry Gourrier said of him: "Germain Bonel's painting expresses [quite naturally] the singular beauty of forms, the radiant force of colour, the deepening of matter and the tenderness of the things of life. His work appears to be a painting of plenitude." From 1941 to 1945, Germain Bonel studied drawing at the Municipal School of Fine Arts in Perpignan. He won first prize in 1945. Out of competition, he continued his studies at the same school from 1945 to 1948 and he regularly exhibited his works at the annual exhibition held at the Salle Arago in Perpignan. In the opulence and extravagance of this exhibition, the tight framing propels forward the earthly beauties against a luxurious background of precious dyes created by the hand of man. The tray laden with fruit is placed on an entablature covered with a sumptuous Persian carpet in shimmering colors. Offering figs, bunches of grapes, apples and burst pomegranate, it transports us to the south of France. A Macaw with red feathers seem to watch over the contents and courageously confront two small toy spaniels installed on a luxurious red velvet cushion generously embroidered with gold threads and decorated with pompoms. Captivated by this tense atmosphere, we barely see another intruder: a squirrel quietly nibbling a bunch of grapes. On the left in the foreground our eye is immediately drawn to two melons, one of which is half-open and ripe. The realistic rendering of his skin with its bumpy texture awakens our sense of touch, it seems that this rough surface created thanks to generous serifs can break the canvas, like a fruit ready to burst. Scattered warm lighting creating chiaroscuro betrays the Italian influence. This is how fruits and animals emerge from the darkness with aesthetic force and a three-dimensional appearance. Our work is a variant of the lost composition of Reynaud Levieux known through replicas and its publication in the catalog of Jean Wytenhove Reynaud Levieux and classical painting in Provence (Aix-en-Provence, 1990, p. 58, repr.), our painting wonderfully illustrates the fame of this composition in its time. This aspect of his production is less known today, and is an essential milestone for better understanding the talent he displays in this genre. As evidenced by his paintings, the painter was greatly influenced by the Italian master of the Roman Baroque still life Franceso Noletti or Fieravino active in Rome between 1636 and 1654, the period of Reynaud Levieux's first stay in Rome. This period corresponds to a turning point in the art of Italian still life. The first Italian still lifes, around 1600, are meticulous and precise, often with symbolic meanings, linked to religion, the vanity of earthly foods, and the transience of life. A few decades later, Italian still life adopted the baroque style, which suited it wonderfully: it always sought illusion, the faithful rendering of materials, but in abundance, heaps and luxury. Having become a decorative object, it gains in virtuosity and ease what it loses in spirituality. Reynaud LEVIEUX (Nîmes, 1613 – Rome, 1690) Son of a glass painter, Protestant from Uzès, settled around 1612 in Nîmes, Reynaud Levieux was born on January 6, 1613. After initial training in his father's workshop, of whom he will always keep the taste for smooth, contrasting painting and impeccable technique, he left for Rome in 1635. He was part of a team of six painters with Pierre Mignard, Jean le Maire, Charles Errard, Jean Nocret and Nicolas Chaperon. Under the direction of Nicolas Poussin, he copied Raphaël - two painters who would have a profound impact on him. Oil on canvas by Edouard Goerg (1893-1969), France, 1958. Life is always the same. Acquired in 2017 from the personal collection of Edouard Goerg. Measurements : with frame : 62.5x53.4 cm - 24.6x21 inches, without frame : 55x46 cm - 21.7x18.1 inches, format 10F. Signed "E.Goerg" (see photo). Preserved by the painter, then by his family since his death in 1969, this painting appeared in 2017. Entitled "Always life begins again", it is a crepuscular work. Testamentary one could say, so much the statement which is made there is definitive. The fact that he kept it until his death tends to consolidate this vision. Far from the empty looks and death faces of the rebellious era of sarcastic expressionism, the terrifying and compassionate testimony of the Spanish war, and the post-WWII flower women, we are dealing here with a a form of reasonable abdication, but honest. This idea that although everything changes, nothing changes. Changed times, actors, ideas, the same comedy occupies the society. Having given up the idea of ​​changing the latter, Goerg accepts the fact that the only alternative is to stay there or get lost. This work is similar to La Vie Recommence of 1935, reproduced on page 54 of Gaston Diehl's book devoted to the painter (Éditions de Clermont, 1947). On the latter, the artist depicts his vision of life, from birth to death, made of hope, fear, cruelty, resignation and fatality. 23 years later, Toujours La Vie Recommence shows us the road traveled by the painter. It is no longer a matter of denunciation, but ultimately of acceptance of reality and the difficulty of staying there yourself. The admirer of Hieronymus Bosch gives us an inspired composition. The hand of God, the only expression of physical beauty in this work, comes down from heaven to give life. Symbolically, it holds an egg that dispenses the element from which the human protagonists find their birth, and in which they move and tangle more than they impose. Beautiful allegory of society. Four characters, two women and two men evolve in this societal marigot. The man in the foreground, ruddy face, evolves with ease. His body is supple, flexible, adaptable. The right man with massive shoulders and wrapped, shows a physical maladjustment to the activity he is doing. He struggles to stay afloat, his face expresses effort, even exhaustion. But he assumes. What is not the case of the demonic archangel (recurrent in the works of Bosch) with the stunted body, who leads the dance and holds this character, we understand the painter, under his control as to have fun. As this character cannot change bodies, Goerg cannot change values. He does it with. Mobilized in 1914, he is sent to Artois, then to Argonne. From 1920, he exhibits at the Salon des Independants, then at the Salon d'Automne where he joins with Laboureur. At Berthe Weil, in 1924, he participates in the exhibitions of the Gromaire group, a prelude to a series of exhibitions in Paris (Berthe Weill, Bernheim Jeune), as in Brussels (Le Centaure). Goerg illustrates books including Table of the beyond by F.Boutet. In 1928, he meets Paul Guillaume who exhibits his works in Boston and the Art Institute of Chicago. He continues to show his works, satires of the bourgeois manners, at Bernheim Jeune, then at Lucie Krogh. In 1934, he travels to Belgium and Holland where he paints surrealist paintings that will be exhibited at Jeanne Castel.
