Turkish LA Artist Modernist Abstract Portrait in Silver Leaf on Paper Painting

Ali Acerol, who was born in Bursa, Turkey in 1948 and died in Los Angeles in 2007, became a kind of legend in the Southern California art world for his stunning maps of countries and continents, his invented and satiric postage stamps, and his brick furniture— as well as for being stubborn, impossible, and brilliant. He grew up in Istanbul, then was educated at the Sorbonne, in Paris. Acerol said that his earliest memories were of taking walks with his father in Istanbul and noticing old brick walls. He continued his fine arts education in 1975 at CalArts in Southern California.
This piece contains elements of Arabic and Islamic calligraphic abstraction.
This first posthumous exhibition of works is drawn primarily from the collection of Richard Hertz, author of two influential works on the local art scene: Jack Goldstein and the CalArts Mafia and The Beat and the Buzz: Inside the LA Art World. The show includes Acerol’s magnificent eight by twelve-foot World Map that has not been seen in public for over thirty years.
The World Map, covered with sign language that names the countries and cities, was originally Acerol’s MFA thesis project. Like all his works, it does not speak in simple terms. As critic Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe wrote, Ali’s art is about parallel meanings and mutual incomprehension — “lots of little hands where there should be words, a symbolic code unfamiliar to most…”

Knox Martin (1923-2022) was an esteemed New York School painter. Knox Martin was born in 1923 in Barranquilla, Colombia. He was the son of the aviator, painter, and poet William Knox Martin, the first man to fly over the Andes Mountains.
After serving in World War II, Knox Martin attended the Art Students League of New York on the G.I. Bill from 1946-1950, where he studied with Harry Sternberg, Vaclav Vytlacil, Will Barnet, and Morris Kantor.
In 1954, Knox Martin's friend Franz Kline placed a painting of his in the Stable Gallery Annual. Charles Egan of the renowned Charles Egan Gallery saw Knox Martin's painting at the Stable Gallery and asked Martin to show his work in a one-man show for the tenth anniversary of the Egan Gallery.

“My series of paintings deal with sensation and ultra-color,” Kate explains. “I am considering the concepts of over-consciousness, Horror Vacui and the overlap between joy and terror. In visual art, “horror vacui” (from Latin “fear of empty space”), also kenophobia (from Greek “fear of the empty”), is the filling of the entire surface of a space or an artwork with detail.
For this series titled “Gold,” each piece is influenced by a topic of consideration: technology, super-nature, genetics, pharmaceuticals, perception. As Kate studies and meditates on these subjects, her path of investigation grows more and more intense until she teeters between becoming overwhelmed by fear for our future and a euphoria filled with hope and intention. “I feel so much life that I am paralyzed by it, and I am confounded by how sensation and numbness can blend together,” says Kate. “All that glitters is Gold.”

The scene presents two figures in a landscape, one on horseback and another gesturing to a fallen deer. The stylization of the landscape shows influence from the Byzantine tradition of painting, with jagged rocks jutting into a golden sky. A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West, and many of the most important examples are in Western, or Turkish, museums.
