This fantastic Dutch Old Master marine oil painting is by noted Dutch marine artist Abraham Storck. Painted circa 1670 the composition is a number of ships heading out to sea, their sails billowing and banners and flags blowing in the wind. The sea is also choppy and clouds race over head. It is an ambitious, busy nautical scene and Storck has perfectly captured the energy and movement of the ships and smaller vessels. This is an excellent example of a 17th century Dutch Old Master oil painting. Provenance: Part of a private collection of Flemish & European paintings. Koller Auctions in Switzerland in 2011. Bonhams 2020. Condition. Oil on canvas, 25 inches by 24 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an ornate 23 carat gilt carved Lely period frame with name plate, 32 inches by 31 inches and in excellent condition. Abraham Storck (1644-1708) was a Dutch painter, who enjoyed a reputation for his marine paintings, topographical views and Italianate harbour scenes. Storck was also an outstanding draughtsman. Storck was baptized in the Noorderkerk, a Protestant church in the Jordaan. His father was the painter Jan Jansz Sturck (or Johannes Storck) (1603-1673), from Wesel; his mother was Teuntje (Apolonia) Jacobs. The couple married in 1628. Storck had two brothers, who were also painters using the name Sturckenburch until c. 1688 after which they started calling themselves Storck or Sturck. It is likely they were all trained with their father in the family workshop and joined the local Guild of Saint Luke, otherwise it was impossible to sell any painting. Circa 1666 Storck established his workshop producing naval, harbor scenes as well as landscape paintings and city scapes. In 1670 he traveled with his brother Jacob and worked in Germany. In 1694, at age 49, he married the widow Neeltje Pieters van Meyservelt. At the end of his life he lived on Kattenburg near the harbour. This stunning British 18th century Old Master portrait oil painting, with exceptional provenance, is by noted artist George Romney. It was painted in 1788, commissioned by James Evelyn of Felbridge as it is of his younger daughter Anne, aged 20 years old. James was a Doctor of Law and Anne's mother was his second wife, Jane. Felbridge house, Anne's home, was in the village of Godstone in Surrey. This superb oil painting is a seated portrait of Anne, wearing a white dress with a green sash, her forearms exposed and her hands in her lap. Anne is blessed with the most wonderful long auburn curly hair and is visually stunning. Her body is partly turned away from the artist/viewer and she is slightly gazing down at us with confident, clear eyes. Anne is pictured in a landscape with a dramatic sky behind her. Romney's brushwork on her dress, hair and the background is superb. The delicate detailing of her facial features is also stunning. Sometimes Old Master portraits can be a little staid, but this one of Anne with her wild auburn hair and bold look is just magnificent. This is a fantastic example of George Romney's work and of an 18th century British Old Master with exceptional detailed provenance. This jewel of the Venetian school, a work executed between the 16th and 17th centuries by a Venetian artist, illustrates the episode of the Resurrection of Christ: as reported in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 28:1-7) the event is accompanied by an explosion of light and glow, with the figure of Christ rising into the sky. Christ's face, serene and victorious, looks up towards the Light and the Infinite, in contrast to his majestic figure, here constructed with the appearance of a classical sculpture, contrasted by an intensely luminous background. After Jean-Baptiste Van Loo, A Portrait of King Louis XV of France (1710-1774) A magnificent quality three-quarter length portrait of King Louis XV of France and Navarre, painted in the 18th century after Jean-Baptiste Van Loo. The present composition follows a portrait of Louis XV painted by Jean-Baptiste Van Loo in 1726-1727, today in Versailles. (Oil on canvas. 198.5 by 143 cm. Inv. no. MV 6942.) There were several full-length portraits painted by Van Loo of the young Louis XV, and all were executed in the years of or after his majority, 1723, when he took full control of government, wresting power from the Régent, his great-uncle Philippe, Duc d'Orléans. A slightly larger version (205 by 171 cm), in which the pose and surrounding paraphernalia mirrors that of the present work, is in the Château de Versailles, while another, in which Louis stands more front-on, his pointing right index-finger now tucked in, and with a different background arrangement, is also in Versailles. Further versions of this latter are in Nice, Musée Chéret and the Musée de Perpignan. The composition of all of these full-lengths would appear to derive from Van Loo's large equestrian portrait of Louis XV, painted in collaboration with Charles Parrocel, which was commissioned in 1723 by the Surintendance for Charles de Lorraine. Louis is depicted in similar armour and costume, astride his horse, similarly turned three-quarters to the left and his right arm outstretched. Collection number 858 on verso. The apostle in half-length portrait, looking upwards. His shoulders are bare from his blue shirt, a brown cloak is draped over his arm. In his hand he holds the ‘keys to paradise’, which make him attributively recognisable. The bearded face shows the pleading remorse for his defamation of Christ described in the biblical account. The painting style immediately reveals Petrini's brushwork. The painter, who was born in Ticino, is one of the northern Italian-Lombard artists of the late Baroque period, who was possibly associated with Bartolomeo Guidobono (1654-1709) in Turin after 1700 and is documented with works in his home city between 1711 and 1753. Works by his hand were mainly found in the Como, Bergamo and Lugano areas. Other depictions of St Peter can be found in the church of Dubino and in a private collection in Montagnola. In 1991, an exhibition of his works was organised at the Villa Malpensata in Lugano, Switzerland. The painter was the son of a sculptor and, according to the sources, a pupil of the Genoese painter Bartolomeo Guidobono (1654-1709). However, he was also inspired by the works of Andrea Pozzo (1642-1709). Works by his hand can be found in several churches in Piedmont, such as San Maurizio in Pinerolo. This superb Italian 17th century Old Master animal oil painting is attributed to Baroque artist Giovanni Agostino Cassana. Painted circa 1650 the composition is of two rabbits, a guinea pig and a dove in an interior. The two rabbits, one brown one grey are in the immediate foreground, head to head eating something and the dove is standing to their right. The brown and white guinea pig is sitting above and behind them. As the background is dark the animals really stand out and there is superb detail in their respective fur and feathers.
