Finding My Way 2 Cheryl D. McClure oil on paper on wood panel 20 x 20 x 0 in Inv #: 795 Price $1800 To make my paintings I have come to the realization that I use what I call the ‘Three I’s” of INFLUENCES, INTUITION. and INTENT. Like a lot of artists, McClure’s interest in art developed early in childhood. She recalls, “When I was eight years old, I begged my dad to let me take an after-school painting class. I was shocked when I got there and found out they were painting with paint by number kits. I did not want to do that. I hate coloring inside the lines. So, the teacher allowed me to look for images to use as inspiration. In my memory, I think the first one must have been a reproduction of a Cezanne landscape. I just did what I did all on my own, but I loved mixing colors. Then my dad died, and we moved from Oklahoma to Texas. Sadly, I never really did anything else until I was in my twenties. I then took up painting again all on my own and trying to learn from other artists demonstrating their painting techniques and taking workshops. I have been painting ever since, more than forty years.” She continues, “For many years I only painted with acrylics or mixed media collage. In 2005, I also started painting with encaustic and have gone back to using oil paint again. I suppose acrylic remains my dominant medium. Mixing it up now and then keeps me on my toes and is a great way to learn. Each medium can teach you certain aspects of painting others do not. Each medium has its strengths and weaknesses depending on what you want to express. You can learn from all. I did not love watercolor because it took too much pre-planning. But I learned a lot about negative shapes and composition. I learned a lot with pastel and charcoal about making marks. By working back and forth with different media, I am growing as a painter.” If I used only intent, I would more than likely be disappointed because my imagined intent is always elusive. I get more than I imagined by not setting too many rules about how to get there. Using all of these factors, I can use the knowledge of formal issues that comes from viewing a lot of art and, also, from being in the studio making art all of the time. Using that comprehension of formal design as an aid to intuitively know what is the right relationship of color, mark, space, etc. is the intent. Intention is necessary to direct you to explore the former two. Lisa Weiss’ work is about mark making, patterning, spontaneous movement, momentary awareness and paring down to essentials. She is continually looking for ways to detach from the past and future with a focus on the here and now. Weiss’ paintings are process driven by movement, repetition, materials, and place. Her works are for beauty and contemplation. A professional artist from Tennessee, Lisa Weiss received her BFA in painting and sculpture from Middle Tennessee State University in 1990. She received a teaching assistantship to Louisiana State University in Painting and Drawing and completed her MFA in 1996. Lisa has exhibited her work nationally in solo and group shows for the past fifteen years. She is included in numerous public and private collections throughout America, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Holland. She has the honor of being in the Hunter Museum permanent collection. In the last seven years, Lisa has attended four artist residencies: Dorland Colony in California, Millay Colony in New York, Wurlitzer Foundation in New Mexico and the Nantucket School of Art on Nantucket Island. She has taught design, painting and drawing at the University of Southern Mississippi, Watkins College of Art and Film, Eastern New Mexico University and Winthrop University. Lisa has recently earned initial certification for teaching yoga from Yandara Yoga Institute in Todos Santos, Mexico. She has traveled the United States, Mexico and Europe. The sides show beautifully smoothed wood. Kazaan Viveiros has a background in architecture studies as well as fine art, and this shows in her clean and contemporary works. Artist Kazaan Viveiros earned a BA with distinction from the University of Virginia in Studio Art and Religious Studies, and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has since exhibited work in solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe, including solo shows in New York, San Francisco, Berkeley, Scottsdale, AZ, Richmond, VA, and Savannah, GA. In 2003, curator Raffaella Guidobono gave Viveiros a show at TAD Concept Store in Rome. Viveiros’s paintings have been collected by a wide array of corporations, including eBay and Capital One Bank, as well as by individuals such as WalMart’s Rob Walton and novelist Danielle Steel. Her large diptych, The Whale, was purchased by Banner Children’s Hospital and currently hangs in their radiology ward. Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center in New Jersey has many of her works in their collection. The artist begins by finding the organic material in her 4-acre garden in upstate New York which she then arranges and embeds with encaustic on a wooden panel. The brown, earth toned sea oats are laid in a linear pattern on a wood panel with a surface of green encaustic and then sealed with clear wax. The encaustic wraps around to the sides of the panel, revealing some bumps and downward drips, accumulated during the natural drying process. The piece is lightweight and hangs on one d-ring. About the artist and her work: After moving to the rural town of Stone Ridge, NY seventeen years ago and starting a 4-acre botanical garden with her husband, mixed media artist, Allyson Levy, has found endless inspiration in the plant kingdom that surrounds her.
