In the warm morning glow of a country kitchen, a young boy entertains his little sister seated in a high chair. In return her adoring glance speaks volumes. The dramatic angling of the baby’s high chair, whose design harks back to the seventeenth century, animates the scene. Through an economy of means and a limited palette of largely brown and orange, Jacob Simon Hendrik Kever captures the richness of the moment and its idyllic rusticity.
Josef Israels was the first to encourage Kever to study painting. He began his training at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, in 1869, studying with Petrus Franciscus Greive until 1872. From 1874 - 1875 he attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, also in Amsterdam. From 1878-1879 under the tutelage of Charles Verlat he was enrolled in the Koninklijke Acaemie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp. His subjects included portraits, cityscapes, landscapes, flowers, genre and interior scenes in watercolors, oils, and etchings. Throughout his career he worked in Blaricum, Nunspeet, the province of North Brabant and Eemnes. Although not technically considered a member of the Laren School he also lived there from 1877-1879 and again in 1905-1922. He further maintained an apartment in Amsterdam near the Oosterpark where he resided during the winter months. In its prime, Poseidonia thrived, evident in the remnants of city walls, colossal temples, and the overall urban layout. As Magna Grecia expanded and established trade routes, conflicts arose between the Greek colonists and the indigenous Samnite and Lucani tribes. Archaeological findings, however, suggest a period of peaceful coexistence between the Greeks and the Lucanians.
This harmony was disrupted in 273 BC with the arrival of the Romans. The Romans, while altering the city's name to Paestum, did not obliterate it. Remarkably, their admiration for the splendidly constructed temples played a role in shaping classical architecture on the Italian peninsula, influencing subsequent Roman development and style. The Romans made additions to Paestum, including a forum, an amphitheater, a temple of their own, and residential structures, some of which still stand today.
In 79 BC, the eruption of Vesuvius dealt a partial blow to Paestum, altering its landscape. Despite this setback, the city's survival attests to its resilience and enduring cultural significance. Today, visitors can explore the fascinating remnants of Paestum, a testament to the confluence of Greek and Roman influences, and the architectural prowess that has withstood the test of time.

On the Anglesea Coast - Welsh Coastal Beach Watercolour Antique Painting

A fine late 19th century watercolour depicting fishermen bringing in the days catch on the Anglesea Coast by James Aitken. The artist specialised in coastal scenes around the British Isles and is very well regarded. Signed lower right.
This is one of a pair that we currently have available - the other depicting the Mull of Galloway in Scotland.

James Aitken was born at Newburgh in Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1853/54. He is known to have been active as an artist from 1880 and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1894-1918.
He painted mainly maritime scenes in England and Scotland, and also made several visits to the continent, to paint in France, Italy and Switzerland. From 1894 he visited the Isle of Man, and liked it so much that he moved there permanently with his family in 1911. They took up residence in Port St. Mary.
James Aitken exhibited works at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute, the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Cambrian Society as well as in the provinces. He was a member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts. Today, he has works in the Warrington Museum, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
