Robert’s work incorporates small poetic texts, often in a childlike manner. She did not utilize conventual tools, such as a paintbrush, but moved the paint with her hands. Though right-handed, she preferred to use her left hand to tap into a fragile creative energy akin to the mark-making of an untrained child’s first gestures. Her work, therefore, has a sense of discovery that is both assertive and tentative. Her poetic texts are evocative and sometimes nonsensical, functioning more compositionally than literally. Her works on paper are often composed of variegated scribbles, and her paintings are rich painterly statements that move between abstraction and fantastical landscapes. Louise Robert’s first professional exhibition was held in Montreal...

Cobalt
Located in London, GB
About the Work: Working in reverse, the image is constructed within a frame of taut silk. Pushing the paint in choreographed gestures, they reveal themselves on the other side, like the texture of a tapestry. Each tiny gap formed by the warp and weft of silk thread is filled with an extruded pixel of colour, resembling the organic patterns of lichens, the skin of a reptile or a galaxy. The pressing of paint unveils to us the underside of the mark, the moment of contact between material and surface that we would never ordinarily see. Light plays a pivotal role in the creation of the artwork, guided by the idea of transverse orientation, which is the behaviour of flying insects that orient themselves toward a distant source of light. Light passing through the silk serves as a guide, revealing areas where paint has not yet touched the surface; it acts as an anchor point, a signal, a place to catch the light. As the screen fills with the movement of paint, the glow from the other side is slowly obscured to the artist behind the screen. The paintings exist through their unbridled unpredictability, engaging in a dialectic that dissolves the hierarchy between painting as an illusion or imitation and painting as an archetype; a free, material process. About the Artist : Gala Bell is a London based multidisciplinary artist. The alchemy of matter is at the centre of her practice, moving between traditional painting and contemporary installation. Graduate of the Royal College of Art, she has been selected for exhibitions with The Design Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The London Design Festival, The Korean Cultural Institute Berlin, Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz Berlin and Galerie der HBKsaar in Saarsbrucken. Bell has had commissions by BBC One and Tate and Lyle...

"Following I" abstract acrylic painting on canvas, black lines neutral pale tan
Located in Hamburg, HH
A large abstract painting on canvas by Amanda Andersen; one in a series of five in the "Following" series created in 2013. (Three of them are available for sale, two sold.) This series was made with a linseed oil medium on the geometric parts of the canvas to create areas of semi-gloss transparency to contrast the larger matte surfaces. Black tape from a VHS cassette was draped in the studio and used as reference to create the abstracted black forms in the piece which elegantly stretch out and pile together in the middle. Background areas of pale pink, tan and beige let the black tape stand out, layered with pale yellow and yellow green rectangles. This series belongs to a larger body of work created in the early 2010s which explored vintage technologies and materials. Including still life paintings of VHS cassette tape–like this one–as well as reel-to-reel tape machines...

Binyamin Basteker, Urban Landscape , 2022 oil on canvas 60 x 80 cm
Located in Jerusalem, IL
Binyamin Basteker Urban Landscape, 2022 oil on canvas 60 x 80 cm 24 x 31 in Binyamin Basteker was born in Mumbai in 1953. Growing up in a family of artists, his unique talent was discovered at a very early age. He perfected the art of portraiture and color while still living in India. Following his immigration to Israel in 1969, he studied with the modern Israeli masters and was considered to be one of the promising young abstract artists of the 1980s. In the mid-1980s he became observant and ceased to exhibit his work. The artist’s inaugural solo exhibition of oil paintings entitled “Stones that Speak” set Basteker apart from the mainstream of “modern” Jewish, religious painters. Whereas in many instances the theme of the painting, whether it be the Kotel or Jerusalem or the wealth of themes available to the observant artist, becomes the goal of the artist, Basteker relates to the “theme” as the “excuse” for the painting. Basteker searches for balance and harmony in his life and translates this to color and texture and motion. Nothing is his work is arbitrary. Every stroke and splash, every line and curve contribute to the perfect composition. The artist’s selection of tools, a result of an immediate inspiration, greatly affects the application of the color and texture. His works are sophisticated and worthy of deep examination. Tremendous layers of thought and spirituality are engraved in each and every work. Yet to the casual viewer, the paintings are aesthetically pleasing on a very simplistic level. On first glance, we see a beautiful bouquet or garden. Yet as the viewer’s eye travels and dissects the composition, we might imagine a maestro conducting a symphony orchestra or a pianist’s graceful fingers dancing over the keyboard. “Jerusalem Flowers” are unique to the Holy City...

Rhythm, Janssart, Oil paint/canvas, Zero Art
Located in OOSTERBEEK, NL
Janssart, pseudonym Wouter W. Janssen As early as the age of six, the talented Wouter painted the blossoming blossom trees in his parents' garden. At fourteen, he painted a portrait of his teacher at school and was rewarded with a ten for ‘drawing’ on his diploma. His fascination with painting of the 15th and 16th centuries led to a nearly perfect copy of "El Greco's Madonna" at age 16. This love of artistic expression continued to grow over the years, fuelled in part by the success of his creations. At the age of eighteen, this passionate painter decided to devote his life entirely to fine art, combining his studies at art school with working in a restoration studio. Here he discovered the secrets and painting techniques of the old masters, it fuelled his interest in art history and art movements. The extraordinary thing is that so coincidentally the history of painting became synchronized with his artistic life. Wouter Janssen studied the painting technique of his favourite painter Rembrandt for more than ten 10 years. He became wanted to unravel the mystery of the master. The paints used at that time were naturally rubbed by himself to approximate a historical effect. In a subsequent episode, he immersed himself in the technique of Romanticism. His paintings, mostly landscapes, were made in the style of the Dutch Romantic School. And led to unprecedented success in America. For example, with one-man exhibitions on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. After watching a documentary on the life of Vincent Van Gogh, Wouter Janssen wondered what it would be like to paint in an impressionist style. It came naturally, after consuming half a bottle of gin, with extraordinary results as a result. The urge to complete the historical circle was further completed by his transition to Zero Art...
