Girl from Gombe
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Girl from Gombe is an original painting by Abifola Olorunlana. Olorunlana created Girl from Gombe with Acrylic on a 36W by 48H inches primed canvas. The Girl from Gombe is a two-portrait series about a young girl from Gombe who is trying to find balance in her personal life in a society that does not really care much about the mental health of young people. In each portrait, her bodily pose, complemented with fresh-looking green plants and every other element in the painting tells a story about all the good and bad choices that have led her to where she is; the influence of her academics, family, religion, and the friends she surrounds herself with. While she's fighting her insecurities, and facing a dilemma in her career choice, she seems to persevere in living. Whenever I look at my subject and listen to her talk, all I see is a beautiful girl who has fallen prey to what we all refer to as life: Abifola Olorunlana decided to narrate with paint on canvas as a reminder that no matter what the situation is, as long as we are alive our lives can always get better. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (Issued by the Gallery) About Artist Olorunlana Abifola (b. 1999) is an emerging visual artist from Nigeria whose works of art cut across mix-media and contemporary art paintings which includes portrait paintings of Black people...

La Contrebasse - Expressionist Musician Portrait Oil by Gen Paul
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed expressionist oil on canvas portrait by French painter and engraver Gen Paul. This charming work depicts a seated musician wearing a green suit with a black bow tie playing the double bass. This beautiful example of Gen Paul's work dates to the 1950's when he painted numerous studies of musicians playing various instruments in jazz such as the saxophone, violin and the double bass. His interest in this was likely based upon his father's career as a cafe musician. Signature: Signed upper right Dimensiosn: Framed: 30"x21" Unframed: 22"x13" Provenance: Private French collection Gen-Paul was born in the Rue Lepic, at the heart of Montmartre. His mother was an embroiderer, and his father was a café musician. Gen-Paul began painting from a young age. An apprentice interior decorative artist, he looked about him in the wealthy apartments where his work took him and observed the pieces collected by art lovers, and he learned anatomy by getting to know surgeons and going with them into operating theatres. He also attended the École des Beaux-Arts. He painted on discarded cigar boxes using...

Reuven Rubin Israeli Aubusson Wool Tapestry Judaica George Goldstein Jerusalem
Located in Surfside, FL
This is an Aubusson style flat weave hand woven wool tapestry. This is from the George Goldstein Atelier in Jerusalem. (Originally known as Nazareth Tapestries) They produced genuine handmade Gobelin tapestries in Israel). This does not bear a label and is not signed, (it might be one of a kind) It might have been a study for a larger piece. It is based on a painting of a fisherman. In 1964 the first French style weaving studio was inaugurated in Israel, in the new city of Nazareth Ilit. With the encouragement of master Jean Lurcat, woven upon several contemporary masters’ original sketches, such as Jean Lurcat, Hans Hartung, Adolph Gottlieb, Karel Appel, Yaacov Agam, Mordecai Ardon, Reuven Rubin, Danny Caravan, and more. Some of these tapestries encountered their moments of glory during the international exhibitions, such as in the Museum of Modern Art (NY), “Expo Montreal” (Canada), Biennale of Lausanne (Switzerland), and others. In 1967, after the Six-Day War, Nazareth’s workshop closed its doors and returned to Jerusalem, where I opened a new studio with a young team made up of eighteen artisans, dedicating their work more specifically towards Israeli artists. The tapestries are woven upon the original sketches of Yohanan Simon, Naftali Bezem. They can be seen on the walls of the Israeli President’s residence, the Yeshiva University of New York, the University of Haifa, New York Bank Discount, as 60-square meter tapestries for the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem, and in ceremonial art. Tapestries for Parochet and Torah mantles are seen in Washington, Bet-El Springfield, Babson College, Boston, Bet-El Univ. Andover, Bet-El Highland Park and the Strasbourg Great Synagogue in France. Along with Itche Mambush in EIn Hod these were the fine, Gobelin style modern art tapestry...

Inseparable
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The artwork titled "Inseparable" portrays a strong relationship between women and Aje, the Yoruba deity of wealth, prosperity, and feminine power. The piece captures the essence of this relationship through vibrant colors, intricate details, and symbolic imagery. The details in the artwork are also significant. The women wear traditional Yoruba attire, with intricate patterns and symbols that reflect their cultural heritage. The necklace on the neck is adorned with cowrie shells, and other ornaments, which represent the wealth and prosperity that Aje brings to her devotees. Aje has no gender yet it's inseparable from feminine You're in search for aje but left behind the woman Surely you've failed even before you start You're on the journey of making it really big but neglect the power of the source Do you think a river can ever have any wonder aside from the source Women and wealth are inseparable yet women are the destroyer of AJÉ The artwork "Inseparable" is a testament to the deep connection between women and Aje. It portrays the strength and resilience of women and the power and prosperity that Aje brings to those who honor her. It also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people and their reverence for the divine feminine. Nakedness of Truth
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Nakedness of Truth is an original painting by Abifola Olorunlana. Olorunlana created Nakedness of Truth with Acrylic on a 36W by 48H inches primed canvas. Nakedness of Truth was made over a painting Abifola Olorunlana did and didn't like (an underlying painting depicting four figures fetching water from a river and gossiping about someone they didn't like). The Nakedness of Truth is a painting that advocates for people who belong to the LGBTQ community and salutes their unity in making the movement impactful globally. For years many have stayed reclusive about their true identity due to religious beliefs, societal constructs, and government laws which have left many depressed till their last days, many were even killed for courageously coming out to state their true identity. This is depicted in the painting: dark yellow eyes sticking out of the woods to portray a sense of public rejection, yet my subject boldly stands out of the green woods and leaves to express courage, strength, and power. An elegant and sophisticated decorative touch in any living space, portrait paintings have remained popular throughout the years and are widely loved pieces of art for display in many homes today.

Portrait paintings are at least as old as ancient Egypt, where realistic, lifelike depictions of the recently deceased — commonly known as “mummy portraits” — were painted on wooden panels and affixed to mummies as part of the burial tradition.

For centuries, painters have used portraiture as a means of expressing a subject’s nobility, societal status and authority. Portraits were given as gifts in Renaissance Europe, and a portrait artist might have been commissioned to help mark a significant occasion such as a wedding or a promotion to high office. Prior to the advent of photography, which eventually replaced painted portraits as a quicker and more efficient way of capturing a person’s essence, the subject of a portrait had to sit for hours until the painter had finished. And during the 18th century in particular, if an artist commissioned for a portrait struggled with how to adequately memorialize and capture a subject’s likeness, sometimes a portrait painting wasn’t completed for up to a year.

Whether it’s part of the gallery-style approach to your living-room or dining-room walls or merely inspiration as you devise an eye-grabbing color scheme in your home, a portrait painting is a timeless decorative object for any interior. A landscape painting or sculpture might give you the kind of insight into a specific region of the world or a different culture that you can ascertain only through art. Similarly, when you take the time to learn about the subject of a portrait painting that you bring into your home — the sitter’s history, the relationship between the sitter and the artist should one exist, the story of how the portrait came to be — that work can become intensely personal in addition to its place as an object for an art-hungry corner of your apartment or house.
