About the Item

Antique oil on canvas of a Russian or Polish nobleman, painted by Rembrandt van Rijn in 1637. There is much controversy about this painting, currently housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and has previously been owned by such luminaries as Catherine the Great and Andrew Mellon. It has been referred to as both a Polish and Russian nobleman, the sitter wears a Russian sable hat and is wearing a large pearl earring and gold chain of office across his fur coat and is holding an ornate gold topped cane. Many have speculated who the sitter is, including possibly Rembrandt himself in his inimitable mischievous manner, but scholars generally believe it is of a Polish nobleman. It was common for artists who were being classically trained to replicate famous works by the Old Masters that proceeded them, this is a very good, mid to late 1700s such rendition of Rembrandt's enigmatic portrait. Condition is very good, this interesting portrait is ready to hang on you wall.

Portrait Of A Scottish Monarch Oil On Canvas 19th Century
Located in Milan, IT
Oil on canvas. Intense and high quality, the painting depicts a monarch of the royal house of Scotland. Around the portrait, in a painted oval frame, there are some writings: the name Rober(t) appears at the top left, the title Rex at the bottom left and the abbreviation Scot, which stands for Scotorum, on the right; the writing at the top right is not identifiable, but it seems to be an acronym. The man portrayed wears a hat and a coat adorned with ermine fur, which is considered the noblest fur, reserved for royalty. He wears a golden pendant around his neck, which depicts two leaves with the fruit of the thistle, which, in heraldry, symbolizes Scotland. The writing and the pendant therefore refer to a Robert of Scotland, probably from the dynasty that reigned in the fourteenth century. The portrait was however executed in the romantic nineteenth-century period, probably using some ancient engravings...
