About the Item
Al Saralis
'Summer Breeze'
110 x 80 cm
oil on canvas
Artist Al Saralis lives and works in Hampshire (United Kingdom) and, as he says, does not paint reality, but what he perceives and wants to pass on.
His subject is always created in collaboration with the models he works with. The models are known to him and know what he wants to show with his paintings. In his colorful portraits and figure paintings, the models 'like' to look at him. The viewer makes contact with the models and thus also with the artist. After all, the models look at the artist while posing.
During the summer exhibition 'Summer Breeze' we show a series of paintings that the artist has made for the exhibition over the past six months.
The artist himself about his work:
‘I have always been interested in the classical beauty of Renaissance painting, and this alongside my fascination with the human form has led my work to develop to where it is now.
For this ‘ Summer Breeze ‘ show I chose to explore more fully the visual aspects of sun and shade which is a strong element of my imagery, compositionally.
Strong light and dark pools of shadows.
Nature and its changes are a consideration in my work. We all are aware of climate change and it's threat. This is an underlying element within my paintings. Much of the work has elements of changes in nature.
The 'breeze' is a metaphor for the changes that we are experiencing in our climate.
I use photographs as a source but am not interested in photographic realism . I love the 'frozen' moment of a photo and I try to elongate that moment. I like the contradiction of this. I often use the color of rust within the work . Rust color relates to time passing .
I regard myself as a figurative artist but not a painter of realism as such. The type of realism I try to achieve is of an expressive and emotive realism. The figures within the paintings have an introspection which is also something I like to explore .
I like my work to be regarded as a mixture of contemporary and classical.
The work of Al Saralis can be found in collections in UK, various other European countries, USA, etc.

Al Saralis
Al Saralis is a British painter whose evocative figurative works explore the quiet tension between light, shadow, and human introspection. Born in a Welsh mining town in the Rhymney Valley in the 1960s, his heritage is a blend of Welsh resilience and Greek legacy, reflected in the timeless, classical sensibility of his art. A graduate of Cardiff with a degree in Fine Art, Saralis now paints full-time in Hampshire, England. His work, often featuring a solitary figure, is stripped of overt narrative yet rich with unspoken emotion. Strong chiaroscuro compositions heighten the atmosphere, drawing the viewer into moments of contemplation. While rooted in the traditions of figurative painting, his approach transcends realism—favoring an emotional truth over mere representation. Nature’s fleeting beauty is a recurring motif in his work, underscored by a subtle yet pressing awareness of climate change. His series Nothing Gold Can Stay, inspired by Robert Frost’s poignant poem, meditates on the impermanence of innocence and the cycles of life, echoed in the shifting winds and delicate environmental cues woven into his portraits. “I regard myself as a figurative painter but not a realist painter. The realism that I am interested in is the emotional connection made when making or looking at a painting,” Saralis explains. “My work has been described as conjuring a feeling of thoughtful introspection. I strive to create something beautiful as well as intriguing, contemporary as well as classical—something timeless.”

Judith
Oil and bitumen on canvas
120 x 180 cm
This painting shows the most important things in the works of Dutch painter Yvonne Heemskerk, female strength and the love for the material. Painted with oils and bitumen to give the layers a kind of roughness that she wants to have for showing what fire does.
The artist herself explains about this work:
Sharing my process and deeper feelings about my painting Judith. My first painting shown with my new found medium… tar(bitumen)!! The roughness of the material is the starter of it all. Underneath all these colors there is this wild, rough untamed sticky basic, that tries to get a grip...
