About the Item

Artist: Antonio Mercurio Amorosi (Comunanza, Italy, 1660 - 1738) Title: Portrait of a little girl with cat Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: without frame 42 x 31.5 cm – with frame 56 x 44 x 4.5 cm Shaped, carved and gilded wooden cassetta frame Expertise by Giancarlo Sestieri, art historian There is an immediate spirit of almost familial familiarity in this marvellous canvas by Antonio Amorosi (1660-1738), a painter from Marche, Italy, particularly devoted to genre painting. Born in Comunanza, a medieval village in Marche, he moved to Rome when he was 8-year-old with the intention to become a priest, but his encounter with Giuseppe Ghezzi (1634-1721), an Italian painter of the Baroque period, made him change his mind. He worked in Giuseppe Ghezzi's workshop for 11 years before becoming an independent painter. This exquisite painting depicts a little girl with a pink flower in her hair, who's holding a black cat with her hand. Whether the little girl in question, from the Canesso collection in Paris, is a portrait or a genre invention by Amorosi is still open to question.
