About the Item

Ta ba ku laa dere (only after death our legacy transcends us) honor those who died and give thanks to those who survived so we may live, the pain they endured, their sacrifice and act of resilience to survive, and the legacy left behind. I’m I a puppet? a marionette on strings, dancing to the whims of my master, with every move, my existence sings. but who is the master? but as I dance and twirl, I begin to question why, why am I here, what purpose do I serve? is there more to life than just being a guy? I have no will of my own, no thoughts or desires to pursue, I am but a vessel for my master’s art a creation brought to life by his skill and glue. Yet I still wonder and ponder, if there is more to this life I lead, or if I am destined to dance forever, a puppet with no soul or need. so I continue to dance and perform, but deep down inside, I yearn, To break free from these strings that bind me, and discover the truth of my existence to learn. Live is beautiful yet man lives on laws and policies made by who? Live man! live! voices in my head When you are asked about your journey on this planet, reply with I came, I saw, I moved on. Over time in the history of black people, slavery seems to be the most prominent event notable, which has affected the way Africans and black people see themselves. Yet there was a time in history when we were kings, queens, and royalties. we tend not to teach these to the younger generations because even most older generations are not aware of this. This is a call for awareness so to speak in a way to improve the way we see ourselves and educate ourselves about our history. About Artist Orioye Bukola, born in 1993 in Osogbo, Orioye is a native of Ekiti State. A graduate of Chemistry from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Trained by Mr. Tope Fatumbi of Topfat Art Gallery; Adamasingba, Ibadan 2019. He is inspired by societal issues and life demands, beauty, culture, and African Spirituality – with a focus more on the female gender as a conduit to all else. His philosophy is about simplicity and determination without harm none. Orioye's mind quest has progressed to infused questionings and suppositions in his canvases beyond mere rhetorical aesthetics; (as the trendy atmosphere now seems mostly to suggest). His works speak in metaphors that flow between the past, the present, and the postulation of the future. He probes on relics to unearth anchored reasoning which shares semblances with contemporary happenings. His stylistic sense is inventive of punkish style piles of hair reminiscent of the 80s and discotheques, parted with sharp oblique angles which are reflections of the hard chiseled surfaces of the Yoruba effigies he introduces into his works, seasoned with a strong sense of fashion. Orioye is concerned with African spirituality and how they interface with the identity, memories, worship, and total well-being of the people. This adaptation of the past to interface with the present and postulate a futuristic nuance is evident in his warm leathered-clad supersonic subjects whose demeanor echoes the Star Trek, UFO, and intergalactic Adour of postmodern Hollywood cinematic periods. This pendulum of interactions between the past, the present, and the futuristic postulations, defines Orioye’s works and lent them a certain direction. The combinations create inquisitiveness for explorations that permeate the borrowed eras, espousing bygone traits of exhumed investigative nuances, memories, identities, and spirituality of bygone cultural epochs. It will be exhilarating to calmly observe the growth of Orioye Bukola’s sojourn in the interpretations of his curious and investigative narratively placed overtures.

Damsel
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Damsel" is a work of art that immediately draws the viewer's attention to the glorious charm of the woman at its center. Adewale's portrayal of her low-cut hairstyle is a powerful statement that challenges conventional norms of beauty. With her hair styled so boldly, the subject exudes a sense of self-assuredness, breaking free from societal expectations and embracing her uniqueness. The woman's choice of a vibrant yellow dress further reinforces the celebration of feminine allure. Yellow, a color often associated with happiness and positivity, complements the woman's radiance, illuminating the canvas with her inner glow. This striking hue symbolizes her inner strength and vibrant spirit, echoing the confidence and dynamism that emanate from her presence. The blue background, in contrast, serves as a calming and harmonious setting, providing a perfect backdrop for the woman's portrayal. The serene blue not only accentuates her poise and elegance but also serves as a reflection of her depth and wisdom. It suggests that beneath her external charm lies a profound reservoir of inner grace and strength, making her all the more captivating and multidimensional as a subject. "Damsel" is more than just a beautiful portrait; it is a celebration of the richness and diversity of womanhood. Adewale's brushwork masterfully captures the subtle details of her facial features, highlighting the delicate contours of her lips and the gentle curves of her cheekbones. The artist's attention to detail emphasizes the individuality and uniqueness of the subject, celebrating the fact that each woman possesses her own distinct brand of charm and beauty. This artwork is not merely a passive representation but a self-conscious portraiture that actively engages the viewer. As we gaze upon the woman in "Damsel," we become participants in this celebration of femininity. Adewale invites us to appreciate and honor the beauty that exists within all women, encouraging us to recognize and celebrate the allure that each woman carries in her own unique way. In its essence, "Damsel" is a testament to the empowering nature of art. It breaks away from conventional stereotypes and standard definitions of beauty, presenting a woman who embraces her identity unapologetically. The artwork's appeal lies not only in its visual aesthetics but also in the powerful message it conveys to society, urging us to appreciate and cherish the diverse expressions of feminine charm. In conclusion, "Damsel" by Busari Adewale...
