About the Item

A pair of beautiful oil paintings by Fritz Zuber-Buhler, titled "The New Arrival" and "After Bath," exemplify his dedication to academic traditions in the 19th century. Both pieces capture tender moments of motherhood, showcasing Zuber-Buhler's skill in rendering the delicate interplay of light, texture, and emotion. Artist: Fritz Zuber-Buhler (Swiss, 1822-1896) Date: 19th Century Medium: Oil on canvas Signature: Signed ‘ZUBER-BUHLER’ Dimension: 24 in. x 20 in. Zuber-Buhler, born in 1822 in Le Locle, Switzerland, came from an academically distinguished background. He pursued his education in Germany, Italy, and France, studying under François-Édouard Picot at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Picot, a former student of Jacques-Louis David, was instrumental in guiding a generation of 19th-century painters rooted in academic principles. Zuber-Buhler's contemporaries from the École des Beaux-Arts included notable artists such as William Adolphe Bouguereau, Alexandre Cabanel, and Léon Perrault. Despite the rise of modernist movements, Zuber-Buhler remained steadfast in his commitment to academic painting, producing captivating scenes of women, cherubic children, and slightly mythologized scenarios. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1850 and continued to exhibit at various European Salons throughout his career, maintaining his allegiance to the traditional techniques and themes of the academic style. These paintings reflect his signature style, with an emphasis on refined details, graceful figures, and a warm, inviting atmosphere that evokes the gentle and loving moments of maternal care.

Late 19th Century Oil on Board by Johann Georg Meyer Van Bremen
By Johann Georg Meyer Von Bremen
Located in Chicago, IL
This small and exquisite 19th-century oil on cardboard titled “Reading to Mother” by Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen depicts a gentle interior scene with a young boy attentively reading to a woman, presumably his mother. They are both seated at a small table, the woman rests in a chair outfitted with a large pillow and a faraway look. The painting is nested in a statement giltwood frame, with the artist’s signature on the lower right corner. The frame is a neoclassical Louis XVI-style gilt frame with bellflower trim on the top edge, guilloche detailing on the back edge, ribbon trims, and a fluted cove. Oil paintings on cardboard gained popularity in the late 19th century, offering a convenient and affordable alternative to canvas for artists and enabling greater artistic experimentation. Many renowned artists explored this medium. Oil on paper was often prepared with a layer of primer or gesso to create a stable surface for the paint and to prevent the oils from soaking directly into the paper. Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen commonly known as Meyer von Bremen (1813-1886), was a German genre painter specializing in Biblical, peasant, and family scenes. He was a pupil of the Dusseldorf Academy where he largely painted religious and historical subjects. In 1840, after traveling in Bavaria and Switzerland, he began to develop pleasant genre scenes focused on incidents from popular life, especially among the Hessian peasantry, and the portrayal of childhood and family for which he became known. He spent the remainder of his career in Berlin, becoming a Professor at the Academy in 1863. He was also a member of the Amsterdam Academy and the Order of Leopold...

By Federico Andreotti
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
***PLEASE NOTE: EACH PAINTING INCLUDING THE FRAME MEASURES 16.75 INCHES X 14.5 INCHES*** Federico Andreotti Italian, (1847-1930) A Bouquet of Flowers & A Fine Vintage Oil on canvas, pair, both signed Image size: 12 inches x 9.75 inches (each) Size including frame: 16.75 inches x 14.5 inches (each) A delightful pair of three quarter length portraits of Italian women by Federico Andreotti. The first work shows a young woman in fine clothing with a basket of flowers in her hands. The second painting depicts a traditionally dressed woman holding a Chianti Fiasco and other wine bottles. Federico or Federigo Andreotti was a genre and figure painter born in Florence on 6 March, 1847. He showed artistic talent from an early age and at 9 years old began receiving art lessons from the miniature painter Angiolo Tricca (1817-1884). At the age of 17, he attended the Art Academy in Florence where he studied under Enrico Pollastrini (1817-1876), the President of the Academy. Whilst there he won a competition and made a name for himself by producing amusing genre scenes and costume studies. His success attracted the patronage of wealthy and notable clients including the King of Italy who commissioned him to paint a large historical painting of Savonarola. As well as working as an artist, he also taught art at the Florentine Academy where he was made Professor in 1879. During the same year, he began exhibiting abroad and made his debut at the Royal Academy in London, where he continued to show his works until 1883. He is believed to have spent time in England around this period where he also exhibited at other galleries including the Royal Manchester Institution, United Galleries, Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson & co. He spent most of his life in Florence where he died on 30 October, 1930. His painting of Savonarola is held by the Italian government. Other examples of his work can be found in a number of UK public art collections including the Blackburn Museum, Fylde Town Hall, Glasgow Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery and Towneley Hall Art Museum. Presentation: The paintings are housed in new, English made gilt frames which are in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, these works are offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art
