In order to gain awareness of something that is concealed yet right in front of your eyes, or hidden in plain sight, you must distance yourself. Rain´s art is a metaphor for life. Rain has invented a form of art that is both unique and participative. Anybody looking at one of his paintings can perceive the convergence of two opposing pictorial styles: the abstraction of the many coloured concentric circles that thicken into dense and imperfect dots in relief, and the figurative aspect of the image that is defined by the sum of these same dots as the viewer retreats. The artist’s intended message lies here: His art is an invitation to also create some distance in life, because as Gestalt psychology sustains, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. We must view the big picture, the whole, without worrying about isolated events or individual points of view.
Up close, Rain’s paintings consist of small concentric dots painted in different colours of acrylic paint. From a distance the eye merges these colours into one. The more distance taken, the clearer the portrait becomes. He begins this process with a sketched portrait. To decide the place of the dots on the canvas, he uses a string grid, or projection. The grid takes around ten hours to make, but is more accurate than projection, so Rain uses both techniques. Then he picks the colours for the final dots, by deciding the final colour of the dot and works backwards.
Rain has a list of 14.000 different dots that he has made. From this list, he picks the combination that creates the desired colour.
Dot size is important. The white canvas Rain works on means the bigger the dots, the darker an area gets and the smaller the dots, the lighter the area becomes. The colours of separate dots will also merge together into a new colour. It is not just each dot but also a combination of dots that create the colour.

Gavin Rain
Gavin Rain studied Art and Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town. Influenced by Seurat, the 20th century Russian avant-garde, art and a number of architects, he started exploring and developing his own neo-pointillism technique around 2003–04.
Rain's style arises from the need to present a new perspective where the purpose is to compel the viewer to recognize the narrative that is hidden from sight, the one that is discovered only when going back from the painting. The artist compares his work with our lives. Up close things are interesting, with a lot of texture and noise, and not very clear. But, taking a step back, we see the influence that people and things have in our lives, and how it is built of every individual dot.
Through his art, Rain seeks to expand the visual and cognitive horizons of people.
Rain has participated in various fairs, mainly in Europe and the United States as well as both individual and collective exhibitions around the world. His participation in the Venice Biennale in 2011 and 2013 stands out in particular, for it got a lot of attention.

Zahra ZEINALI was born in 1975 in Tehran, Iran.
From 2001 to 2004, she studied Fine arts at the Art and Architecture University in Tehran.
At the same time, she taught visual arts to children during 15 years.
Passionate about photography, she trained in photography in 2007 at the House of Photography in Tehran.

The Doll’s House
“What can a true artistic temperament aspire to after a youth spent in Iran today?
To flee the hassles, prejudices, restrictions, to open wide a window of freedom rich in potentialities that were believed for a long time inaccessible. Zahra Zeinali became a visual arts teacher for fifteen years. Her pupils are 6 to 12 years old. Drawing, sculpture, painting, model design, she taught them a great diversity of techniques, but above all to think and design freely by themselves, in an atmosphere of joyful creative disorder which, surprisingly, is tolerated by a careful hierarchy. Then she studied four years at the University of Art and Architecture in Tehran.
When she arrived in France, after a brief abstract period inspired by the rhythms of nature, it was at the time of the Charlie Hebdo and Bataclan attacks, which marked her deeply, to the point of lastingly darkening the ideal of emancipation and autonomy that she had projected on her stay in Paris. "There is no paradise on earth" she concluded with a melancholy smile. An old doll, bought for 1 euro in a storage room, triggers a click in her. The bitter imprint left by the Iranian confinement, the memory of her fifteen years of teaching visual arts to children, the loneliness of her Parisian exile, all this sentimental nebula found a plastic metaphor in the image of the doll. This is what these delicate earthenware faces evoke, often abused, abandoned, the childish innocence of their ingenuous gazes, a sort of strange absence from the world of the living, as if their attenuated life took place behind the mystery of a theater curtain...
