About the Item
A wonderfully atmospheric portrait of a young Benjamin Britten. Britten was a renowned British pianist and composer of the 20th century. Weissbort was introduced to Britten by his great friend Malcolm Lipkin at a music festival in the 1950s. Weissbort was passionate about classical music and also painted portraits of Lipkin, Gerald Finzi and Jonathan Miller.

George Weissbort
George Weissbort was a Belgian–born British artist. He lived and painted in Wye Valley, England. The critic Brian Sewell, considering him an important exponent of an earlier style at a time not widely receptive to it, described him as having "painted the right pictures at the wrong time"

This portrait is by an artist who propelled rapidly into the limelight after her first solo exhibition in 1920, at the age of 19, with the Daily Graphic naming her as the 'Girl Who Draws Like Raphael'. Yet today Clara Klinghoffer's name is little know.
Klinghoffer's early success resulted in numerous portrait commissions, including this one of the English composer Stanley Bate. The bold use of colour and naive execution of this portrait clearly reveals the modernist influence of fellow Jewish artists such as Bernard Meninsky, Jacob Kramer and Mark Gertler...
