About the Item

Ghizlan El Glaoui Coronation Red, 2022 Oil on canvas Signed by the artist, on verso 110 x 90cm Ghizlan El Glaoui is a Moroccan-born artist based in London, known for her richly hued, expressive painted portraits that bridge traditional techniques with modern innovations. Born in 1969, she spent much of her childhood in her father's studio, the world-renowned painter Hassan El Glaoui, absorbing the vibrant colours, lights, and energy that would later influence her work. El Glaoui's artistic lineage is impressive. She is the granddaughter of Thami El Glaoui, the last Pasha of Marrakech, and her father was encouraged to paint by Winston Churchill himself. This rich cultural heritage, combined with the inspiring landscapes of Marrakech, has deeply influenced her artistic vision and subject matter. El Glaoui's subjects are primarily portraits, often of women, characterised by vivid colours and metallic paints that capture light, reminiscent of Byzantine mosaics. Her compositions employ the 'golden ratio' technique, a mathematical approach to achieving aesthetic perfection. The artist's work is deeply rooted in her Moroccan heritage and quest to elevate forgotten cultures. She often draws inspiration from Berber culture and has expressed interest in creating exhibitions featuring Berber women from southern Morocco. Her art bridges her Moroccan roots and her contemporary London base, blending traditional aesthetics with modern sensibilities. There is a significant historical connection between Winston Churchill and the El Glaoui family. In 1943, Winston Churchill encountered paintings by Hassan El Glaoui (Ghizlan's father) during a visit to Morocco. Impressed by the young artist's talent, Churchill intervened by convincing Hassan's father to allow his son to pursue art as a career despite it being considered an unworthy pursuit for a Berber tribesman at the time. Ghizlan El Glaoui credits Churchill for the artistic path that her family ultimately took. His intervention was crucial in allowing her father, Hassan, to study art in London, where he developed his signature style of painting horses, which later became a defining feature of his work. The significance of this relationship was commemorated in a special exhibition titled "Meetings in Marrakech: the paintings of Hassan El Glaoui and Winston Churchill" at the Leighton House Museum in 2012. The exhibition featured nine paintings of Marrakech by Churchill alongside fifteen works by Hassan El Glaoui, highlighting their shared artistic connection and mutual appreciation for Morocco's landscape and culture. Hassan El Glaoui acknowledged this pivotal moment, stating that without the "fateful meeting with Winston Churchill in 1943," his parents' attitude toward his painting might have prevented him from pursuing his artistic career. This intervention ultimately created the creative environment in which Ghizlan would later develop her unique artistic style and career. Through her unique blend of traditional techniques, modern technology, and cultural heritage, Ghizlan El Glaoui has carved out a distinctive place in the contemporary art world, creating visually striking works. In a culture where it can be challenging for women artists to gain recognition, she proudly focuses on portraying women's beauty, soul, and multifaceted nature.
