About the Item

This work is a study for a painting called Cubsit View of Killiney Hill North (which is located near Dublin city, Ireland). The study was exhibited during the artist's première exhibition in Ireland that took place in May 2024 in Dublin, while the canvas paintings had already been sold right before the exhibition opening. As the exhibition was scheduled to be on during the Bloomsday Festival that celebrates James Joyce every year, for the occasion the artist donated one of his Joyce's portraits (Portrait aux Horloges) to the Dublin James Joyce Museum. It was presented to its director and curator on 14th May 2024, to be permanently exhibited there. More of Grégoire Mathias' work is still currently exhibited in Ireland at the well known Gorry Gallery, as well as Howbert & Mays Fine Arts boutique, which had hosted the exhibition. Grégoire Mathias had developed a strong connection with Celtic culture when he lived in Brittany from 1997 to 2005. These influences were awoken again in his work in 2022 when his daughter’s move to Dublin gave him multiple opportunities to visit and paint Ireland. For the artist, the fast changing light associated with the Irish weather has been an endless source of inspiration for his continuous exploration of Diachronic Cubism, and Ireland in his eyes symbolises the union of Earth and Sky. About the Artist: Grégoire Mathias, a graduate of the National School of Fine Arts in Paris (ENSBA - École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts), is exhibiting his work at Sotheby's gallery in Périgueux, as well as in numerous galleries across Paris, New York, and Dublin. Mathias is the creator of diachronic cubism, an unexplored branch of cubism that depicts landscapes, interiors, everyday life scenes, and, most notably, the concept of time itself. This unique style is characterized by the deconstruction of subjects and light over specific periods of time. Since 2020, he has been designing UN posters through the World Federation for the United Nations Associations (WFUNA), becoming the first French artist to contribute to the organization after Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and Vasarely.

Amoureuses by Grégoire Mathias — Acrylic — Bold Cubist Portrait of Two Women
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
Amoureuses (Women in Love) Acrylic on Canvas 41 x 33 cm In Amoureuses, Greg Mathias delivers an emotionally charged dual portrait that merges bold modernism with raw intimacy. Two female figures emerge from a tapestry of angular lines, fragmented planes, and vibrant contrasts. Black contours define and disrupt the forms, while saturated reds, yellows, and earth tones highlight the figures' lips, hair, and eyes with almost theatrical intensity. Mathias’s Diachronic Cubism is palpable in this compact yet powerful composition. The faces appear to hold more than one emotional state or temporal expression, inviting the viewer to imagine multiple layers of affection, memory, or desire unfolding across time. The figures are both stylized and expressive—unified yet distinct—suggesting a narrative of closeness, duality, or romantic introspection. Executed in acrylic on canvas, this smaller-format work makes an immediate impact and is well-suited for collectors of contemporary figurative cubism. It’s a standout piece for those interested in bold color palettes, emotional resonance, and distinctive portraits with modern edge. Perfect for: Collectors of modern figurative cubism, lovers of expressive portraiture, and buyers seeking a compact yet high-impact artwork. Ideal for interiors emphasizing bold lines, vibrant colors, and character-driven contemporary art.
