About the Item
John Goodman was born in California and graduated from the University of California at Davis. He is an American Postwar and Contemporary painter who draws inspiration from the early modernists and the Bay Area Figurative Movement. Using his signature thick impasto paint and a minimal range of colors, the artist sculpts and draws to create painterly surfaces that are charged with directness and intensity. His images are consistently figurative, yet in each, there is a strong pull towards abstraction.
Goodman’s oil paintings are often based on his drawings from weekly sessions with a live model, yet his newest work is inspired by “found” 16th century drawings by unknown artists, and it features theatrical scenes that capture multiple people in varying states of action. Goodman uses the simple line drawings as a point of departure for imagining dramatic narratives of which even he does not know the origin. Yet through these mysterious but “familiar” scenes, there is a thread that connects the contemporary viewer with the distant pasts of people and places.

John Goodman
John Goodman is an American artist born in California. His paintings, drawings and sculptures are a dichotomy of understated minimalism with reductive use of color that conveys a subtle, but evident smoldering energy. Goodman uses thick paint that he sculpts and draws into, as he forms a rich tactile field of painterly surfaces. In his images, there is a strong pull toward abstraction. Bay Area influences are present in his work, particularly that of Nathan Oliveira, who Goodman was privileged to have had as his mentor. Goodman's sophisticated and understated paintings, drawings and sculptures are exhibited coast to coast, have premiered at International Art Fairs and are collected worldwide.

Evocative original oil on canvas painting by the Welsh artist, John Bowen. Signed lower left. Condition is very good. Circa 1970. The artist uses the light to capture the beauty of the young girl looking directly at us with her cat resting in her lap. The painting is housed in a dark wood frame with narrow liner of the same time period of the artwork. Overall framed measurement is 41 by 29 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida estate.
John Bowen (1914–2006)
Carmarthenshire Museums Service Collection
Painter, born in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. After attending Llanelli and Swansea Schools of Art he taught at Llanelli School of Art, 1939–60, also at the Boys’ Grammar School there apart from wartime service in the Royal Air Force. He was an artist member of SWG and also showed WAC and at the Royal National Eisteddfod. In 1968 he had a retrospective at Parc Howard Mansion, Llanelli. Painter of landscapes in Britain and abroad and still life, in oil and watercolour whose work is in many public collections, including WAC and Newport Art Gallery and Museum.
