José Muntané Balaguer was born in Barcelona in 1889. His life and work were shaped by the changing light of the city, the emotion embedded in its landscapes, and the intensity of the historical moments he lived through. From a young age, Muntané felt the need to capture the invisible, that which slips past the ordinary gaze. Although trained in the academic traditions of art, he soon embraced a freer, more expressive style, influenced by the avant-garde movements sweeping across Europe in the 1920s.
In addition to his passion for painting, Muntané was a doctor by profession. His scientific mind, focused on observation and precision, found a harmonious counterpart in his artistic vision. Medicine, with its emphasis on the human form and its complexities, may have informed his approach to art, adding a layer of depth to his exploration of the human condition.
During his travels, particularly in Paris, Muntané immersed himself in the energy of Cubism and Surrealism, but his style always carried something uniquely personal — an essence of the Mediterranean: a sun flickering in colors, a nature merging with emotion. His brushstrokes, quick and decisive, left a trace of light that could appear abstract but was always rooted in the real world.
