About the Item

Romantic French pastel portrait of a Spanish beauty by Louis Fortuney. The work is signed bottom right, titled to the back board and presented in a fine carved gilt wood frame under glass. Fortuney travelled in southern Spain at the beginning of the 20th century and this portrait probably dates from this period when he was intrigued by the Spanish Flamenco dancers and Gyspsy ladies that he encountered. A master with pastel he has captured the subjects cheeky insouciance as she looks over her shoulder, a bright flower in her hair and at her lips, her dark curls cascading down. Louis Fortuney (1875-1951) was a pastel painter who studied at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Toulouse. He captured and drew as inspiration from daily life, subjects initiated by his contemporaries Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Gervex and Sisley. An anarchist, he refused to exhibit at the Salon. He painted in a vein close to Fauvism and Expressionism. He was a friend of Rodin and painted with him in the south of France, in Cagnes-sur-mer. Fortuney was also inspired by the sea, the Breton lights and those of the Mediterranean. He obtained the commission from the State for important canvases intended to decorate the Ministry of the Navy. He painted many genre scenes depicting women in the streets of Spain and Paris, as well as seascapes. He was an expert in the handling of pastel, which was very fashionable during the Belle Epoque, and excelled in rendering the velvetiness of fabrics and complexions. The Fortuney Foundation now promotes his memory and his work.

Large French Society Portrait, by repute, La Comtesse de Blacas, Château d'Ussé
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large scale French society portrait from the 1920s featuring a lady in a 'flapper' dress before a castle and it's garden by Georges Gaudy. Signed bottom left and dated, 1925. The painting is by repute of La Comtesse de Blacas, in front of her home Château d'Ussé. Ussé was the subject of a French railroad poster issued by the Chemin de Fer de Paris à Orléans in the 1920s which may have been designed by Gaudy and this may be where the commission for this painting came about. Presented in very fine custom carved wood, gilt Florentine frame. The early 1900s were the zenith of 20th century society portraiture by the likes of Philip de László...

L V Guirand de Scevola (1871-1950) Portrait of a young woman, 1928, oval pastel
By Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola
Located in Paris, FR
Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola (1871-1950) Portrait of a young woman Pastel on paper 38 x 28 cm (oval) Framed under glass in a vintage framing : 45 x 35 cm A label on the back "1928 Portrait de femme Etude au pastel de Guirand de Scévola" (see photographs please) This pastel study is of course not signed, as the label on the back of the frame gives its attribution to Guirand de Scévola and, equally interestingly, the date 1928, but in fact the artist's style and execution are immediately recognisable without the need for a signature. This type of woman with a bun is typical of the models the artist loved. Her mysterious air recalls his Symbolist period, and pastel is hisr preferred medium because it lends itself to all the characteristics typical of his art. Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola ( 1871 – 1950) was a French painter. He was student of Fernand Cormon and Pierre Dupuis...
