About the Item
Masri Hayssam (Lebanese, born 1965)
"Essence Persona" 2023
Oil Paint, Acrylic Paint, Canvas, Stretcher Bars
The artist signed the bottom right and back of the canvas.
This stunning hand-painted portrait by Masri showcases a raw, unfiltered exploration of human emotion, captured through the artist’s innovative use of his thumbs and palms. A master of expression, Masri conveys a depth of humanity rarely seen in contemporary portraiture. The face emerges from the canvas in a striking, fragmented form—its features distorted yet profoundly alive with emotion. Every brushstroke and every splatter of paint speaks to the complexity of the human experience.
Masri's "Persona" series delves into the profound exploration of human identity, aiming to construct abstract concepts such as essence, dispersion, and creation through the raw and unfiltered expression of the human face. Each piece in this series transcends the limitations of traditional portraiture, transforming the human face into a symbolic representation of these complex ideas.
Unlike hyper-realistic portraits, which often focus on technical perfection, Masri’s work bypasses literal representation to capture the raw intensity of inner feeling. The fragmented face invites the viewer into a deeper, more personal connection—one that transcends the surface. It is as if the subject’s soul is laid bare, not through meticulous detail, but through the expressive power of color and form. The disarray of brushstrokes becomes a metaphor for the chaos and beauty of the human condition, embracing vulnerability and strength in equal measure.
Masri's work reflects an exceptional understanding of human nature and the emotional complexity that lies beneath the surface. For those who seek more than a portrait, this piece powerfully reminds them that the most authentic representations of the human spirit often come not from flawless technique but from the artist's heart and soul.
About the Artist:
Masri is a passionate Italian, US-based artist whose work has been exhibited in the USA, the UK, Germany, Lebanon, Italy, and Norway. His work is varied and known especially in Europe and in Major collections - Ellen Degeneres, Ringo Starr, Al Gore, and many more.
Harnessing an insatiable desire for artistic discovery, innovation, and perfection, he dives into experimentation with openness and enthusiasm. As a result, his works are bright, expansive, and bold. Masri has developed a style that captures the Middle Eastern mood with a Lucien Freud brush touch. This style is completed with palette work, as the artist often goes into a trance-like state when creating these powerful expressions of the human experience.
Artist statement:
"I live four seasons every day - it is a humongous world of perceptions, conceptions, and achievements; a world of renewable psychological input and output fraught with flowing emotions, endurance, and pain. "
The painting comes with a certificate of authenticity and a letter of appraisal.

Hayssam's art reflects his multicultural background, blending Middle Eastern and European influences with abstract and figurative elements. His work often explores the relationship between the natural and the artificial, the tangible and the intangible, and the visible and the invisible. Masri Hayssam's artistic journey is a testament to his commitment to self-expression and exploration. He is a master of paintings of the raw human condition.
