About the Item

This superb British Victorian exhibited portrait oil painting is by noted female artist (Frances) Maud Porter. Her married name was Maud Bigwood and some of her later work is signed this. It was painted in 1897 and exhibited the same year at the London Royal Academy lot 99. The sitter is G.W Barber Esq JP and the portrait was presented to him by the Central Council of the Conservative Associations for the Brentford Division of the Country of Middlesex in 1897. The composition is a half length portrait of Barber wearing a black suit and pink carnation, so possibly a portrait to celebrate his marriage. Barber has a fantastic large moustache and is wearing a pinz nez on a chain and gazing down at the artist/viewer. It is a lovely, sympathetic portrait and the facial details and brushwork are superb. Porter was a well respected Victorian female artist who exhibited regularly between 1888 and 1905 including 19 times at the Royal Academy and this is an excellent example of her work. Signed and dated 1897 on canvas, off cut attached verso. Provenance: Exhibited at the Royal Academy London in 1897 no.99 entitled W.G Barber Esq. Inscribed 'Presented to G.W. Barber Esq. J.P. by the Central Council of the Conservative Associations for the Brentford Division of the County of Middlesex' on gilt plaque from original frame, attached verso. Condition. Oil on canvas cut down, image size is 26 inches by 18 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame with ornate corners. Framed size is 31 inches by 23 inches and in good condition. By Jules Elie Delaunay

This superb French Victorian portrait oil painting is by noted French society painter Jules-Elie Delaunay. Painted in 1883 it is a three-quarter length profile portrait of the Marquesa de Escombreras. Her full name was Trinidad Maria Piedad Fulgenico de Aguirre. She was born in 1824 in Cartagena, Spain, the seventh and last child of Jose de Aguirre, a retired naval officer. On October 22nd 1843 she married Frenchman Hilarion Roux (1819-1898) who was a banker from Marseille who settled in Cartegena in January 1843. After her marriage she was known as Trinidad Roux. Hilarion Roux had arrived in Cartagena first to trade silver. He quickly became one of the main lead industrialists in Catagena then in the Mediterranean area. The couple later lived in France again, in Marseille and later in Paris, where Trinidad died in 1905 aged 81. Interestingly there is no similar portrait of her husband. Pair of 19th Century portrait oil paintings of Italian women
By Federico Andreotti
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
***PLEASE NOTE: EACH PAINTING INCLUDING THE FRAME MEASURES 16.75 INCHES X 14.5 INCHES*** Federico Andreotti Italian, (1847-1930) A Bouquet of Flowers & A Fine Vintage Oil on canvas, pair, both signed Image size: 12 inches x 9.75 inches (each) Size including frame: 16.75 inches x 14.5 inches (each) A delightful pair of three quarter length portraits of Italian women by Federico Andreotti. The first work shows a young woman in fine clothing with a basket of flowers in her hands. The second painting depicts a traditionally dressed woman holding a Chianti Fiasco and other wine bottles. Federico or Federigo Andreotti was a genre and figure painter born in Florence on 6 March, 1847. He showed artistic talent from an early age and at 9 years old began receiving art lessons from the miniature painter Angiolo Tricca (1817-1884). At the age of 17, he attended the Art Academy in Florence where he studied under Enrico Pollastrini (1817-1876), the President of the Academy. Whilst there he won a competition and made a name for himself by producing amusing genre scenes and costume studies. His success attracted the patronage of wealthy and notable clients including the King of Italy who commissioned him to paint a large historical painting of Savonarola. As well as working as an artist, he also taught art at the Florentine Academy where he was made Professor in 1879. During the same year, he began exhibiting abroad and made his debut at the Royal Academy in London, where he continued to show his works until 1883. He is believed to have spent time in England around this period where he also exhibited at other galleries including the Royal Manchester Institution, United Galleries, Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson & co. He spent most of his life in Florence where he died on 30 October, 1930. His painting of Savonarola is held by the Italian government. Other examples of his work can be found in a number of UK public art collections including the Blackburn Museum, Fylde Town Hall, Glasgow Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery and Towneley Hall Art Museum. Presentation: The paintings are housed in new, English made gilt frames which are in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, these works are offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art
