About the Item

This contemporary expressionist portrait of a woman was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot. It is part of her ongoing series dedicated to Women — a deeply personal journey through paint, where she reflects on what it means to live as a woman in all her forms: as an artist, a daughter, a mother, and a friend. For Natalya, this series is more than a celebration of women — it is a mirror. A way to better understand herself, and through that, others. Each portrait reveals fragments of joy, sadness, courage, beauty, vulnerability, and quiet strength — the many shades of womanhood. Natalya stands out for the three guiding values in her art: authenticity, sincerity, and honesty. “Authenticity,” she says, “is about being true — to who we are, without pretending. Sincerity means revealing our inner world, even if it feels raw or vulnerable. And honesty? It lies in what I choose to paint, and how I paint it. I don’t invent stories — I paint what’s real. Like this woman with red earrings.” About this piece, Natalya shares: “I wanted to paint a woman who knows herself. Who chooses to be herself, fully and freely — no masks, no roles to play. Her red ruby earrings are a quiet symbol of that freedom, a choice to shine in her own way.” She adds: “While creating this painting, I was thinking of all the women who stand for who they are, and what they believe in. Women like Frida Kahlo, whose strength and spirit deeply inspire me.” This vibrant portrait is rich in emotion and color. The woman’s face is shaped with bold, expressive strokes — pinks, reds, yellows, and browns blending into each other like shifting emotions. Her eyes, deep and thoughtful, seem to look inward. The bright red earrings — like blossoms — glow against a green background, bringing warmth and contrast to the scene. There is no hiding in this work — only truth, feeling, and presence. It’s a portrait not just of one woman, but of many. Of what it means to be seen, and to see oneself — clearly, honestly, and without fear. Natalya Mougenot is known for developing a distinctive artistic language that blends elements of Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, Art Naïf, and Art Brut. Her painting style reflects an intuitive and instinctive approach, emphasizing raw emotion and unfiltered perception. Details about the piece: This piece was painted with professional-grade acrylics on heavyweight, acid-free paper. A final layer of protective varnish enhances both its tactile quality and visual intensity. The work is sold unframed, giving collectors the flexibility to choose a frame that suits their space. As the painting conforms to standard sizes, framing is simple and accessible. To inspire presentation, images of the piece framed in various interior settings are included. The painting is shipped flat (not rolled) in a secure box from France and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing its provenance. About the artist: Natalya Mougenot is a painter whose artistic vision naturally extends into photography. Rooted in a deep appreciation for simplicity, authenticity, and the quiet beauty of everyday life, her work invites a sense of stillness and reflection. Born and raised in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, and now based in Lyon, France for over 20 years, Natalya brings a multicultural sensibility and a deeply personal narrative to her practice. Her art—bold, expressive, and emotionally resonant—has found its way into private collections worldwide, appealing to those who value both visual impact and emotional honesty. Her journey began with photography at the age of 11, when she received her first Polaroid camera. Though self-taught, her intuitive approach brings a gentle, observant eye to her images. She doesn’t aim to reinvent the world through her lens, but to embrace it — just as it is. In 2017, painting became her primary mode of expression, though photography remains a quiet companion — a source of inspiration and a practice of presence. Her photographs often serve as visual sketches: some become paintings, others remain as quiet stories on their own. Natalya shares: “I seek to capture the honest, unguarded moments of life — simple, timeless fragments that reveal the poetry in everyday existence. My photography, like my painting, embraces presence and authenticity.” Her work, across both mediums, is a tender exploration of being — sincere, thoughtful, and grounded in the beauty of the real.
