About the Item
Pierre Carrier-Belleuse (Parigi, 1851-1931).
"Portrait of Actress in Belle Epoque Paris" pastel on canvas signed upper right and dated 1921 in its original gilt wood frame.
Biography:
Pierre Gérard Albert Carrier de Belleuse, known as Pierre Carrier-Belleuse, born January 28, 1851 in the 8th arrondissement of Paris (formerly) and died in the 16th arrondissement of Paris on December 31 , 1932, was a French painter.
He is the author of numerous portraits of ballerinas from the Opera as well as singers and actresses from Parisian theaters.
Pierre Carrier-Belleuse is the son of sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and Louise Anne Adnot. A pupil first of his father, then of Alexandre Cabanel at the École des beaux-arts in Paris, he first exhibited at the 1875 Salon.
He joined the Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1890 and was appointed a member in 1893. Every year he exhibited there the pastels that made him successful. In 1895 he was appointed president of the International Society of Painting and Sculpture.
Dal 1885 lavorò quasi esclusivamente con i pastelli. In the same year he married Thérèse Duhamel-Surville, great-granddaughter of Honoré de Balzac. From this marriage a daughter, Pierrette, was born.
In the 1890s he taught at the Académie Julian in Paris.
Pierre Carrier-Belleuse ha dipinto molto sulla Costa d'Opale. Possedeva una villa in cima ad una scogliera a Wissant. The surrounding dunes have been the setting for many of his works. He attended the Wissant School, founded by his painter friends Adrien Demont and Virginie Demont-Breton.
From 1885 to 1932, he lived at 31 boulevard Berthier in the 17th arrondissement of Paris, where a memorial plaque pays tribute to him. È sepolto nel cimitero di Carnot a Suresnes, nella stessa tomba della scrittrice Laure Surville, nonna della moglie del pittore.

Pierre Carrier-Belleuse
Pierre Carrier-Belleuse was one of four artists born to Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887), a thriving sculptor. Pierre studied at the l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, under Alexandre Cabanel (1824-1881) and Pierre Victor Galland (1822-1892). The influence of their soft palates and classical style can be seen in the present lot. He exhibited in the Salon de Paris from 1875, receiving an honorable mention in 1887 and a silver medal at the Universalle Exposition in 1889. He flourished in his depictions of Ballerinas, where his favored medium of pastel allowed him to capture the movement of their dance. Carrier-Belleuse enjoyed working on a large scale. Between 1914 and 1916, Carrier-Belleuse and Auguste François-Marie Gorguet proposed, planned and co-created what was considered world's largest painting: Panthéon de la Guerre (45 ft. high and 402 ft. in circumference) containing almost 6,000 portraits, painted mostly from life.

"In the past I worked on light and shadow effects. Now I paint exclusively for unusual effects and color harmonies." It is with these words that Martin Borgord, a Norwegian-born but naturalized American painter, interviewed by a journalist from the Hartford Courant, explains our painting.Straddling the line between Impressionism and Expressionism, the elegant lady loses the sharpness of detail, blending with light and color in quick, dense brushstrokes.
Excellent state of preservation.Presented in antique carved and silvered wooden frame. It has a regular Fine Arts export certificate.
